I tried both a couple of years ago and bought a Simple Login lifetime deal before their Proton merger. UI was better for me. I love the service, wish this had always existed.
Tell me, please, is it possible to add your name to AnonAddy when creating an alias? Example: < your name >.sa1haj81p@anonaddy.tld.
I think there is at least one way to accomplish that with Anonaddy and Simplelogin but I’m not positive. Both are free to try, I suggest you give it a try.
For those of you who use e-mail aliases, which accounts do you use them for in general, all your accounts or specific ones?
Yes. I couldn’t register with an alias from AnonAddy on Discord, Mastodon and Proton VPN.
i use them for almost everything. most of my 'important" personal accounts don’t have aliases, though.
For those of you who use e-mail aliases, which accounts do you use them for in general, all your accounts or specific ones?
Virtually all of my accounts–the only exceptions are a few important accounts and things where I expect to need to verbally give out the email address to actual people.
Once you get used to using an e-mail aliasing service I think you will find that there are few to no good reasons not to. It doesn’t really make anything more difficult or complex once you’ve adjusted to it (just like with a password manager where initially the idea of using unique passwords for every website sounded untenable but once you adapted you realized it is a non-issue).
Yes, I’ve already changed the e-mail address of all my accounts, you have to think of it as a password manager in fact, it’s not complicated, with the exception of accounts linked to banking, insurance, tax and so on.
I have used SimpleLogin for the last couple of years and when proton bought it I wanted to move to another service. I tested AnonAddy and Firefox Relay but… I went back to SimpleLogin. It has LOTs and LOTs more features than AA and FR… So yes, SL is the only proton service I still pay… I have 3 of their subdomains and my own… I also can use PGP…
Worth every penny, I only hope Proton Administration doesn’t screw a great service… In Example, before Proton, they were going to implement labels, folders and so on… Proton bought it and now these features has been “in process” for a year.
@anon87551335, yes. One can enter a custom address. However, it doesn’t automatically generate a unique section to append to the custom name when you do so:
I utilised aran.horse/converters/time/b36
for that, back when I mimicked that format.
Never had un +2 years
Hi, I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this here. But to add to the discussion:
When you cancel your subscription in SL, you keep the aliases. (even the SL domain ones)
Whereas in Addy, they get deactivated and you no longer can use them.
ADDY’S SHORTCOMINGS:
I agree. To me, Addy’s inexpensive Light plan is not worth it, precisely because there’s a limit on shared aliases, and no limit on standard aliases which are not useful for privacy.
Although I have a serious issue with Proton Pass / SL as an alias manager, I think that combining aliases and password manager in one product at no extra cost is extremely innovative.
IMHO, it pressures standard alone password managers and alias providers to do the same, or be as innovative at no extra cost, or they risk losing market share.
SIMPLE LOGIN / PROTON PASS’ SHORTCOMINGS:
My biggest issue with Proton Pass / Simple Login is that they only allow one alias per third party website, which to me is unacceptable.
Millions of us have multiple accounts with some websites, and we can’t use them with Proton Pass / SL. Even if Proton Pass / SL somehow allows you to create more than one alias for the same website, it is against their rules. I got a warning after creating a third alias for the same website. That’s how I found out about this limit.
I raised the issue with Proton Support, and we exchanged at length about it. They wouldn’t budge and stood their ground on that rule that apparently no one knows about.
Proton / SL’s TOS explicitly say they don’t allow abuse and bulk signups, but they get to define those terms. They explicitly told me that, to them, any more than ONE alias per third party website is tantamount to bulk sign-ups and abuse.
I even asked them, if I buy 3 apples did I buy them in bulk? They refused to comment. It’s very weasly of them IMHO. Their rules are deliberately written vaguely, so they can intereptet them however they please.
I told Proton / SL that they should calirfy their TOS and explicitly say that they only allow one alias per third party website, but they refused. They said their TOS are already clear, which IMO, is BS.
Some first tier support agents at Proton / SL are not even aware of this rule.
I hope Proton changes this rule because it has security and privacy implications that I plan to write a post about in the future.
Does this one alias for one site rule applies to custom domain aliases too or only with Proton’s own domains?
I am not sure. If I had to guess, it’s only with Proton / SL’s own domains. But I suggest you ask them to confirm. And when you do, if any agent tells you that you’re allowed to have more than one Proton/SL domain alias per third party website, ask them to confirm with their superiors. Some agents are not aware of this rule, precisely because it’s not explicit in the TOS.
The only way most people find out is when they break the rule and get a warning from Proton/SL, that they escalate to support.
You get a warning if you create multiple alias(es) in a short period of time. This is a check in place to prevent misuse.
I have created several alias for a single website. It works well.
If you try creating alias on the same website now, it should work. there is no limit to number of alias/website.
There absolutely is. Proton told me as much themselves. Just because you were able to create multiple aliases for the same website doesn’t mean it’s allowed. I am sure some people were able to create and manage more than one free Proton account, but it’s not allowed.
I don’t know about you, but I have been using aliases for years. Long before Proton Pass or Simple Login existed. So when I signed up to Proton Pass Plus it was not to create aliases for the first time. It was to replace the hundreds of aliases I have with another provider. Aliases I have for existing online accounts I’ve had for many years.
So if I have 3 Instagram accounts, for example, I am not going to wait a day or a week to replace each alias I have for each account. I have hundreds and hundreds of online accounts, and there are many websites for which I have multiple accounts. I need to be able to replace the email addresses on those accounts quickly on the same day.
You seem to not believe me. Ask Proton Support. Ask them,if it’s true that they only allow one alias per third party website, and ask them to get confirmation from their superiors if they tell you otherwise.
As I’ve said, I have had multiple lengthy interactions with them. My exhanges with Proton Support about this specific issues lasted months. MONTHS! It’s not allowed. And I don’t want to take the risk of exploiting loopholes if it means I could lose my account. I already got a warning.
I dont know what is the threshold to trigger the warning.
You have already spent MONTHS on this support ticket already. if you could attach some images for the community, it would be awesome.
I hope you find a good email aliasing service.
BTW, which service were you using, and why did you shift to Simplelogin (proton pass)?
Thanks.
I don’t know either, but I can tell you that I created 3 aliases for the same website within less than 2 hours. The language in Proton’s TOS says they don’t allow bulk sign-ups which to them is any more than one. Technically, updating your email for multiple existing accounts with the same website is not the same as signing up for multiple accounts on that website. But to Proton, it is.
Indeed! It was frustrating. I will see what I can do about sharing screenshots. I want to protect my privacy. I know that Proton lurks here. What I can tell you is that our exchanges ended with Proton no longer responding to my emails on this issue. I emailed them multiple times after their last email, and they never responded. It all happened last year. I got frustrated with them very quickly.
I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced this when dealing with the customer service of any company, but when you start asking hard questions, or questions they don’t want to answer straightforwardly, they start quoting the TOS. This is exactly what happened with Proton.
I intended to raise this issue again with them, and I’ll share with you what they tell me.
I was using Iron Vest, which was previously called Blur. Even though I’ve been a paying Proton Pass user for a while now, I have not completed the transition of my Iron Vest aliases to Proton Pass aliases. I have 400+ aliases to update, and it’s gonna take me a while. If Proton Pass / SL didn’t have this limit, they would be the perfect alias provider.
This is exactly what happened to me.
Except it was not with TikTok but another website. OP had 3 pre-existing TikTok accounts. They decided to replace the emails for their TikTok accounts with Proton Pass / SL aliases. And they got this warning.
Most people do not know that Proton Pass / SL doesn’t allow more than 1 alias per third party website, and it’s a huge problem. What’s worse is that Proton is kind of hiding this fact.
The evidence is that many of their agents don’t seem to know about it unless they are challenged on it, and this Redditor who is about to find out. Moreover, in their marketing on social media, Proton encourages people to brag about how many aliases they’ve created. Some have bragged about having created 1000+. But the secret that people don’t know is that only one alias per website is allowed.
