What are your opinions about Cloaked.app new phone number aliases service?

I found this service Cloaked which provide an alias for your actual phone number.

Tell me your opinions

I haven’t seen it being recommended over services like MySudo. But, most importantly, heard they reuse and recycle numbers among Cloaked users in the name of “data poisoning,” which can be a significant red flag

Why do you think it’s a red flag?
Are there absolutely no use cases for it?

I tried to set up an account here and failed. It does not accept any phone number, even none VoIP numbers. Regardless of the country you select, it keeps giving an error, “Please enter a valid U.S. phone number”. Weird also how it has a very limited set of countries available, but even when you use a number there, it just won’t work. I guess this is a very buggy solution so far. Really hope to see something like this with a bit more stability and perhaps no need for a recovery number.

I see some issues I have with them, just browsing their website, but the biggest problem I have is, lack of any transparency reports or any external audit. I can look past them being closed sourced if there was at least this.

Maybe I’m being unfair but it feels like to me, they want to monetize the concept of “security and Privacy”, or maybe that’s just the way the website is made to feel.

I have no issue with the monetization haha, 10 bucks for a bunch of numbers would not be bad at all. But so far it seems unusable.

Paid service is not my issue, I’d rather pay for things I depend on but I also don’t see any reason (audits, transparency etc) to shift trust to their services. Which is where it feels like a cash grab before initial trust is established.

Quite possible that Cloaked has access to some major US GOV db or some db is sitting with open ports lol.

Why is it the description of the post hidden?

@ph00lt0

@lepras is right, why is the description not showing up on the post?

Because it links to a duplicate post that has been closed.

First red flag: all the flashy UI elements on their website. Just to distract people from the fact that there is (almost) no real explanation how they work and like.

Second red flag: huge how cloaked compare section just to show off, and their service is best ofc.

Third red flag: unknown names in top investors section: what is khosla ventures for example?

Lets be honest: every service cloaked offers has been available for quite some time with reputable company called Proton. There is nothing revolutionary in cloaked’s offer.

Cloaked Identities => SimpleLogin + Mail
Password Manager => Pass
Autocloak Beta => Pass
Sharing Identity => Pass/Drive
OTP => Pass

I would not use.

PS. I registered with them for test purposes and look how “noisy” their Dashboard is:

Looks awful TBH and scammy as hell.

PS2: Just 5 minutes after completing my sign up process, cloaked started spamming my mail with their nonsense marketing BS.

Cloaked has a mobile number generator too.

Where is this written?

Also their support on Discord is, well, close to non-existent.

No Safari or Firefox at least?? Seriously?

@securitybrahh dont get it; whats your point with this screengrab?

This is some sad joke…

Ive been in contact with someone from cloaked team and he said that after free, 14days, trial ends, my account will be read only until I pay them.

Fun-fact: They deliberately make deleting an account difficult.

and…

Its blackmail.
Well, fuck off cloaked.

Michael Bazzell did try it out and foubd it tobbe ok for certain things. He doesn’t dig into a ton of it here but I’ve linked to his blog post about it.
