SimpleLogin native domains - free or paid?

When we become a premium subscriber, SimpleLogin offers their premium domain names to generate aliases with
As a premium subscriber, o you use free or paid domain extensions for SimpleLogin aliases?

Honestly the only one that has been any different for me is the .fr which has worked for things like Steam where the others didnt.

When i still use them back then, i used my own custom domain for not be locked on to them. Now I’ve migrated to addy, still use my domain.

I liked their shorter one the aleeas.me though.

After latest Proton Pass nuking my SL aliases incident, I will never use SL’s own domains. Instead everything will be in my own custom domains.

I never use Simple Login for anything important, because it’s cumbersome to respond from aliases (if needed).

For non-essential websites I don’t care, SimpleLogin domains should be fine.

.me is one of the most abused domains ccTLD, according to SpamHaus:

How? You just reply to the email and that’s it.

Sometimes Thunderbird gives error. I also found emails responding from alias, landing in spam.

I believe, Proton Mail should have the best integration with Simple Login. Do you respond with aliases from Proton Mail web app?

I use their Android application.

Very curious about this. What happened? When it comes to aliases, do you have a sub to Proton Pass Plus, SimpleLogin, or Proton Ulimited?

I have Proton Family. Proton Pass is syncing all the aliases from my SimpleLogin, and creating empty logins without any purpose. To cleanup my password manager inventory I deleted everything and this lovely piece of app deleted my aliases in SL too.

Once the aliases are deleted, you can’t recover them. SL support says “this is for security”. Alias is yours, and you can’t recover your own aliases. If you think you have a backup by exporting all aliases into csv under your SL admin page, think again, because SL is not importing any of them back.

I spend nearly a day to recreate every alias, except for the ones which are on SL domains. They are lost forever.

This is another reason why responding from SimpleLogin aliases in cumbersome:

Wait am I doing this wrong? Don’t you have to create a reverse alias and respond to that?

EDIT:

@endorse There is an experimental feature in SL to automatically create a reverse alias when responding. Not sure how this would work if you are responding to multiple people though, maybe @Lukas knows.

I personally have had issue with this not working (totally could be user error) so I always manually create mine, forgot the option existed.

Don’t you think it’s an increased risk of emails ending in spam?

The scenario when we reply with Simple Login aliases.

THIS SUCKS BUT KINDA MAKES SENSE

I’m not subscribed to any Proton suite, only Proton Pass Plus, that I use for aliases. After learning that Proton Pass Plus aliases are managed by Simple Login, even though I have never used Simple Login, what you describe makes sense to me. What I mean is, I’m not surprised that SL login would import all the aliases you created exclusively there into Proton Pass.

However, I think Proton should have asked you first before linking brining your data from one service to another. I’m guessing that by empty logins you mean that you see your SL aliases in Proton Pass, but you don’t see any other info about them other than the alias.

Am I wrong?

VERY BAD MOVE…BUT PROTON IS STILL MESSED UP FOR THIS

This was definitely a bad move. I’m so sorry this happened. Doesn’t Proton Pass and/or SL have a “recently deleted” feature like most password managers? I believe that on 1Password, if you delete an item, it will go in the recently deleted vault, where it will be available for 30 days before it’s deleted permanently. I’d be surprised if neither Proton Pass nor SL have this.

Your story also makes me wonder if a free Proton Pass user is forced to manage their free aliases in Simple Login. Same if you’re a Proton Mail Plus user. If someone is exclusively subscribed to Simple Login, are they forced into a free Proton Pass account, where they can see their aliases?

I suspect so. I don’t like how Proton is heavy handedly forcing Proton Pass on their Proton users who are subscribed to other Proton services. When aliases in Proton Pass were announced, I personally did not expect them to be managed by Simple Login, but exclusively by Proton Pass. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to link the two, but users should have the option not to, IMHO. Unlinking should also be possible.

I SMELL A DARK PATTERN:

I am a long time Proton Mail Plus subscriber. When Proton Pass was announced, I wanted to subscribe to Proton Pass Plus, however, Proton wouldn’t let me because they don’t allow bundled subscriptions. You either subscribe to one service or you upgrade to Proton Unlimited in order to be subscribed to another that may interest you.

For those who don’t want to pay for Proton VPN and Proton Drive, it sucks. Because of this, I had to create a 2nd Proton account to subscribe to Proton Pass Plus. My hope was that one day Proton would allow me to merge my two Proton subscriptions under one account.

They said they plan to eventually allow bundles, but that doesn’t mean they will allow people who already have subscriptions to multiple Proton products to merge theirs accounts into one. I suspect they won’t.

This, plus your story, makes me believe that not allowing bundled subscriptions is a dark pattern to compel users to get a Proton Unlimited subscription. One person managing 2 paid Proton accounts for different services is not practical.

Even bundled subscriptions means more money in the bank for Proton, they’d rather not allow it, and instead bet on you upgrading to unlimited for “convenience”. It’s more than 5 years since Proton has had multiple products offerings.

I don’t see what’s stopping them from allowing bundled subscriptions. I now believe it’s deliberate. I suspect one of the main reason they do this is because of Proton’s products don’t stand well on their own (Proton Drive)

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH STANDARD NOTES?

Your situation makes me worry about what will happen with Standard Notes. I’ve had a lifetime subscription to Standard Notes for years. I don’t use it with a Proton address. The mess that you’ve been going through with Proton Pass and SL makes me think linking an existing SN account to Proton is a terrible idea.

I also suspect that signing up to Standard Notes after it was bought by Proton automatically creates a Proton account for the user. That means that because paid subscribers to single Proton services like Proton Pass or Proton Mail won’t be allowed to bundle their SN subscription to their Proton account, they will be forced to create a 2nd Proton account.

Imagine having 3 Proton accounts because Proton won’t allow you to bundle your Proton Pass, Proton Mail, and SN subscription under the same account.
I also suspect that those of use who had SN subscriptions before they were bought by Proton, will be forced into a Proton account, whether we like it or not. It’s probably already the case.

My Proton Pass Plus account is not linked to any Proton Mail account. The email address I use for it is a different provider, but that email still constitutes a Proton account in Proton’s eyes. It’s extremely frustrating.

You can recover your aliases in Proton Mail by contacting support, but SL support says once you delete them, they are gone forever.

As for importing, it should at least import my aliases from my custom domains back, because they don’t belong to SL, but it imported nothing. I had so much fun when I created 200+ aliases again. Recover option didn’t work too. Sooo, if you are planning to rely on SL, don’t.

Thank you for the message.

Please note that your custom domain aliases can be recovered by navigating to Domains → Details of the domain → Deleted alias and click on the Remove from trash button.

If that does not help you can activate the Auto create/ on the fly alias feature which will recreate the custom domain aliases once a message is sent to them.
