Proton launches Proton Meet (for everyone!)

just checked android app and moible web app, it is not here yet.

I tried to toggle on and off the Zoom thing, didnt trigger anything. Will try on PC when I have a chance.

Edit: Just tried on PC web app, it is not here yet. Tested using Proton Family admin account

Has anyone tried Proton Meet across the world, eg between someone in the Eu and someone in East Asia or EU and South America?

I am using Zoom because I’ve found it to be the only consistently reliable option across many different scenarios, but especially when I have calls with people one the other side of the world. I’ve tried most alternatives at this point and the only one that was close in terms of quality and reliability was Whereby. But they use Amazon so have access to global servers.

I hope Proton Meeting will be better, but somehow I doubt it.

Signal messenger uses AWS too. So, what does this have to do with your apprehension about such a service not being good?

I think they meant Whereby was similar in international call quality to Zoom because they used AWS infrastructure (global latency and routing benefits).

They doubt Proton Meet will match that reliability/quality because it is rare for a service to do so, not because Proton may or may not use AWS.

Yes, thanks, I was trying to say that, without a global network of media servers, it is unlikely that Proton will be able to replace something like Zoom for people who need reliable global video calls.

I wish that weren’t the case, but that has been my experience with other alternatives. And I really have tried most at this point.

Anybody else recently getting encryption errors and/or terrible sounds in their ears during meetings such as the kind that occurs only when Jitsi Meet used to have someone in the meeting that was using a non-compatible browser for end to end encryption?

How many beta testers are there I wonder? It might be good for you to have asked this on an anonymous account.

Why would I do that? I’m a Visionary/Lifetime member, I’m not hiding that I use Proton services and have previously posted about this new service.

Proton Meet apps are now in beta:

Once it opens I wonder if you could share a link to a non-Proton user because that would be a crazy good alternative to a Google Meet. :hugs:

These beta apps are available exclusively for Visionary supporters, but you can invite anyone to join a meeting even if they don’t have a Proton Account or the Proton Meet apps.

Yes you could. The app does not require you to log in to join a meeting.

Haha very fair, I forgot about that paragraph since last time I read the article. :+1:t2:

Now, let’s have it fully open so that nobody needs to have an account to join or create a meeting. But that one might be quite more unlikely already…

its now out of beta and available to everyone.

How to get started with Proton Meet

Anyone can use Proton Meet — it’s free and you don’t need a Proton Account to get started. Just go to proton.me/meet to start your first meeting. You can host calls for free with as many as 50 attendees for up to an hour.

For individuals, teams, and businesses seeking greater usage, meeting capacity and additional features, the Meet Professional plan is available starting at $7.99 per user per month. You can also unlock the benefits of Meet alongside Proton’s other end-to-end encrypted tools with Proton Workspace Standard or Workspace Premium.

Now all we need is a mobile app and that’s a FaceTime and Jitsi killer.

what’s wrong with Jitsi?

Nothing inherently. Personal preference.

I’m guessing only the host will need to upgrade in order to unlock everything? And not everyone in the meeting to have Meet Plus?

Question for visionary users: Do you have the 60 minute limitation?

If it works well enough via browser, I don’t see a need for a dedicated app?

Or even better if it could work with some existing meeting apps. I am not sure if they built it from ground up or based on Jitsi / Jami.
