Hi everyone, could you please recommend a good alternative to Jitsi Meet, Google Meet, or Zoom?
I want a private video conference with good video quality, ease of use, no interruptions, anonymous access without registration, or the option to register via email and use aliases, ideally with screen sharing capability, but it can be without it. The quality of the connection and calls is also important.
I also still see MiroTalk, but I didn’t find any conversation partners in the Brave browser; they couldn’t be heard or seen. I didn’t have time to figure it out, so I tested FramaTalk and Brave Talk instead.
Tested Brave Talk and FramaTalk, but the difference is only in features, maybe in privacy, since Brave can be trusted more. What do you use for video conferences, and what would you recommend for my needs?
I like mailbox.org 's opentalk for this. I’d like to use Signal’s feature for video conferencing, but it requires the participant to have the app.
I’m surprised Proton doesn’t have an offering given their focus on business.
These are also good options. But remember that currently there are no video conference systems with full end to end encryption when more then two people participate other then signal. (at least I am not aware of any)
So if you need to trust the server operator to not spy on your conversations.
You can also use this Open Talk server: https://teamjoin.de/
There are also self hosted jitsi servers you can trust like: https://jitsi.hamburg.ccc.de/
Yeah they really ought to offer a video conferencing solution. But I imagine if they did this, they would make a whole new product competing with Google Meet/Google Chat instead and have Proton users use that.
it’s only a logical step to inclue a video conference system in their suite. And they don’t even need to invent something completely new. They could just self host one of the already developped open source Video conference systems like Jitsi or opentalk.
In jitsi you have to enable end to end encryption in settings manually. I think then it also works for more then two people.
Don’t think Proton will ever do this. They don’t want external dependencies for their payed suite. They’ll have to make it from scratch which is why I think they haven’t done it yet because it takes time and effort to make something like this and integrate it with their services.
yea, I get that. They will make it from scratch. Let’s see how many years it will take
This year is improving their existing suite and polishing it well.
New releases will only happen next year I imagine. They first need to release their Spreadsheets along with improving Docs. Its high time. And of course, introduce Bitcoin Lightening and Monero.
@Proton_Team - I hope you do look elsewhere and beyond your own user feedback forum to learn what people want.
Thank you so much for the advice, I tested a few options. Visually, I didn’t like openTalk, Brave Talk is interesting; as I understand, it’s the same Jitsi Meet but with some limitations. The hosted Jitsi Meet solution is interesting, thanks. But why can it be trusted? Where does this server come from? https://jitsi.hamburg.ccc.de/
Signal’s group calls are interesting, but unfortunately, you can only make calls through the app. I do use Signal, but not everyone does, and it doesn’t suit my use case. I tried the OpenTalk server, but the UI isn’t as convenient compared to the traditional Jitsi Meet, Brave Talk, Zoom, Google Meet https://teamjoin.de/
Selfhosted jitsi
https://ccc.de belongs to the chaos computer clup, a German non profit and (I think association is the English word for “Verein”?) For hackers and activists. They value privacy very highly and have been around for ages.
They are mostly known now for holding events but are pretty big in discovering privacy scandals.
Maybe you heard the recent news that Volkswagen was storing vehicles location data? They revealed that.
Thank you
