is there a point to using organic Maps on iOS when Apple tracks your location anyway

for better or for worse i’m stuck with an iPhone I i’m thinking about using organic Maps but I’m not sure if it makes sense considering Apple will always have my location information anyway would I just be adding unnecessary inconvenience in comparison to Apple Maps?

iOS gives you very granular permissions for location services, you should go through your location settings. You should go through the system services there and see what you’re ok with and what you’re not.

So yes using services like organic maps that give you offline navigation are useful still, the situation is more nuanced.

It depends on your threat model.

Apple collects your location but only can use it in specific contexts unless you ignore all the baked in sharing. Go through your settings properly and Apple would only be able to collect your location for specific reasons like find my etc.

In your case of Apple Maps, the biggest point is that Apple is going to start putting advertisements into it. Businesses will be able to pay so that their restaurant is upranked to Apple Maps people viewing a location near the business.

Apple Maps was already pretty private “corporate” wise with the right settings.
