Why is Apple Maps not recommended?

It meets most of the criteria. The only one that isn’t met is the open source one. Also, it can be used offline.

Apple Maps is great too. Don’t view the recommendations as all-or-nothing, if it’s not on the list it doesn’t mean it’s bad. I think the site could stand to lean less on lists of recommendations and emphasize how to evaluate software for yourself based on your own criteria, but I’m not sure how to do that.

They rely on the OSM data and i believe they don’t participate in the Overture Foundation. I was comparing Apple maps with Organic maps and it was displaying the OSM data from 2-3 years ago with one city showing 6 yr old data.

I don’t think PG was actually evaluating Apple Maps to such a degree but here’s my take at least

I personally agree. I say that before asking here, I’ve read the criteria to evaluate by myself. I know that it uses data from OSM but it feels more complete in some rural areas for me. That said, since it meets all of the minimum criteria and most of the best case, I posted this in order to hear everyone’s opinion.

It’s better than Google Maps from a privacy perspective and more full-featured than Magic Earth. However, if you’re looking for a more independent alternative, Magic Earth is worth checking out.

I think with Apple Maps adding ads I doubt this is worthy of recommendation

in terms of privacy it is definitely better than Google Maps but personally when I tried to get one of my family members to use Apple Maps, Navigation refused to work.

But I can also see where safari is recommended that isnt cross platform yet no Apple Maps for iOS specific and then the alternatives? very interesting

Nonetheless with the issues I had and Apple adding Ads to it, I still dont think it should belong in PG Recommendation (like it is already bad we’re forced on the App Store with ads but on maps at least the ads problem is remedied by using apps like Organic Maps, with maybe Gmaps/Apple Maps for route plotting in cases OSM has it missing instead)
