considering the backslash organic maps got over them implementing hotel refferal link, ![]()
Apple is stepping in quite the landmine indeed
Maybe not. The audience for Organic Maps and Apple Maps has little overlap. If the ads are subtle enough, normies won’t even realize they are ads.
Either way, another slam dunk argument for device wide DNS filtering.
DNS filtering does not work against these ads unfortunately as they are cleverly served from the same servers, see e.g. iOS app store ads.
After re-reading the article I see you are right.
Well that sucks.
I swear, I’m so close to just going back to paper maps. Remember those?
The problem I have is that if Apple is successful with it
I can bet Google will follow suit
Google already has ads in their Maps app. What do you mean?
They do? I never noticed they did
How can you tell
Well, sometimes when you browse the map zooming in and out and whatnot, they show sponsored locations that are highlighted compared to others indicating or pushing users to tap on that. It could be a restaurant, hotel, or any other business.
Also, if I remember correctly, they do show ad like banners under the info section when you tap on a point of interest, location again highlighting a business.
So that’s how it is.
I see
All I can say is through my mom and friend using Google Maps and the web app, I never ever noticed it but whatever then
They may not have it on their website, but they definitely do on their apps.
I still won’t believe it till I see it, in my experience I have not seen it so I still stand by the statement.
And again people I know use the Google Maps App not the Web App like I do
This gives me the impression that business may not be running so well for Apple.
There was always a talk about Apple been focused on revenue from hardware sales and now they seem to be exploring the “modern” business model of pushing ads on their customers.
In the end it kind of feel that we should always expect that a company will in at some point adopt those practices because all that matters are the profit and growth.
This is classic trying to nickle and dime customers that big tech has been doing for a while now. Apple is just the latest company to do so and its sad to see because Apple was not this kind of a company but has become so given the industry pressure to absolutely monetize all avenues through which they may be able to make money.
The thing with accumulation is that you always want more and more profits. Infinite growth is never sustainable, so it makes sense why Apple want to pursue other revenue streams.
The whole privacy ad campaign was meant to undercut Meta’s and Google’s ad revenue anyways, not necessarily a genuine belief from Apple. If they go through with them, ads are just another way for Apple to claw back potential losses (i.e the iPhone Air’s development costs)
A little off topic but I just want to be a fly in room when they were deciding on this.
“You know what we need, a thinner iPhone with an even lesser battery”
What are those people thinking? It’s always been beauty over brains/functionality with Apple. Exhibit B is AirPods Max with a brassiere for a case. rolls eyes
Ummm
awkwardly hides my iPhone Air
Yeah, what idiot would buy one of those?
On a serious note, CEO compensation is tied to stock performance. For stock to perform well, profits have to increase.
Add in monopoly power that snuffs out competition and you get enshitification.
Can you check whether you see big business logos in your city? That’s what it looks like. It’s possible business in your city/country didn’t pick up on it.
Yep. The entire business model and business management at large is flawed and is being abused to a point where even the average consumer is noticing the worsening of everything - enshittification.
What’s the solution? Not being this greedy but there’s no undoing this. Not sure what consumer products’ long term future holds.
