AnonAddy vs. SimpleLogin

ADDY’S SHORTCOMINGS:

I agree. To me, Addy’s inexpensive Light plan is not worth it, precisely because there’s a limit on shared aliases, and no limit on standard aliases which are not useful for privacy.
Although I have a serious issue with Proton Pass / SL as an alias manager, I think that combining aliases and password manager in one product at no extra cost is extremely innovative.

IMHO, it pressures standard alone password managers and alias providers to do the same, or be as innovative at no extra cost, or they risk losing market share.

SIMPLE LOGIN / PROTON PASS’ SHORTCOMINGS:

My biggest issue with Proton Pass / Simple Login is that they only allow one alias per third party website, which to me is unacceptable.

Millions of us have multiple accounts with some websites, and we can’t use them with Proton Pass / SL. Even if Proton Pass / SL somehow allows you to create more than one alias for the same website, it is against their rules. I got a warning after creating a third alias for the same website. That’s how I found out about this limit.

I raised the issue with Proton Support, and we exchanged at length about it. They wouldn’t budge and stood their ground on that rule that apparently no one knows about.

Proton / SL’s TOS explicitly say they don’t allow abuse and bulk signups, but they get to define those terms. They explicitly told me that, to them, any more than ONE alias per third party website is tantamount to bulk sign-ups and abuse.

I even asked them, if I buy 3 apples did I buy them in bulk? They refused to comment. It’s very weasly of them IMHO. Their rules are deliberately written vaguely, so they can intereptet them however they please.

I told Proton / SL that they should calirfy their TOS and explicitly say that they only allow one alias per third party website, but they refused. They said their TOS are already clear, which IMO, is BS.

Some first tier support agents at Proton / SL are not even aware of this rule.

I hope Proton changes this rule because it has security and privacy implications that I plan to write a post about in the future.
