She has some fair critisism in the end.
Hah! Literally just finished watching this. Good video!
Boy, canāt wait for the overreaction of a response from the devs. But this is why I always say, evaluate the product only and not who the makers are (unless the makers of any product are extremists where intentions are clear (reasonably evaluated) to harm people). Pretty much how Veronica here is approaching it.
I personally get and kind of agree the aggressive stance that GOS takes on social media.
They are a group of excellent devs striving for the best security and privacy of a daily drivable OS, they can pretty much tell which product is delivering what they market, and which is not.
And when you see people just keep promoting products that does not really do what they promised, it could be very disturbing.
If I can spot the same thing, I might also keep calling out those spread misinformation or market subpar products.
I might be a bit more āgentle", though. And I might use a different vector, i.e. instead of dismissing the whole product, I would briefly address what such product could achieve, and recommend usecases for such product. It would be more āproductive" and less provoking.
THIS! Exactly. Being a lot more mature and tactful would be so much better for GOSās PR and reputation on socials at least.
Iāve seen a three page response on Reddit from GOS because someone called GrapheneOS a custom rom. This was several years ago. Hopefully, they have relaxed a bit.
Classic. ![]()
Yeah, they has gotten better in last few years.
Saw it yesterday, wanted to watch it before sharing but you were faster! ![]()
Veronica does some very nice videos, not always the most accessible but newcomers but definitely a very nice content + strong stance on privacy/ownership! ![]()
I guess the GOS team can be a bit rude, but honestly if you stick to their website + actual product itself, you might never face that kind of issue.
Them bringing down ācompetitionā is fair, yet could be done in a more chill way maybe?
Itās what happens when people are heavily passionate about a thing and have strong principles I guess.
Still, I do love my GOS too and theyāre doing an amazing work overall! ![]()
Strong principles is one thing. Not being mindful of how to best interact as a FOSS project is another. Strong principles canāt be used as an excuse for inferior internet etiquette. Itās ironic and almost poetic coming from a vastly superior product/software maker.
My opinion.
FOSS is a hard industry to be in, makes you bitter quite quickly given enough time/effort/struggle. I do understand people being less patient with others outside of their own circles.
If you were highly knowledgeable in a field dedicated to tools that enabled defence of human rights and there were others in that field (knowingly or unknowingly) promoting unsustainable and questionably effective approaches to implementing tools defending those same rights, how would you politely sound the alarm?
I think the tone policing angle has missed the big picture and made their responses potentially worse and less productive. Strong educational content, collaboration with existing mass media and frequent highlighting of privacy/security research is probably a great way to achieve what they want (which I think is mostly an informed privacy/security community and better nonsense/quack detection) but barely anyone really asks them to do that. Instead all the focus has been on telling them their approach is wrong without offering acknowledgement of their intentions. Of course, this is all also just my opinion and I am equally capable of being completely wrong in my speculation too. The whole situation is just a bit saddening.
Agreed with the parts above.
Disagree with this one tho, I feel like they are recognized as the best solution for privacy + security, period.
Which is a huge win and will (hopefully) make them sustainable and independent for a long enough time to come. ![]()
Which is quite a win in itself in this industry. ![]()
They still block anyone who disagrees with them on X
Twitter is a toxic and useless platform that forces clickbait and ragebait, I can understand that people would like to just mute that and move along with their day.
Iām not even sure why people are upset with that healthy behavior.
Better that than fighting over for hours on topics and escalate the overall tone of the discussion.
I wasnāt being toxic ![]()
And if they were concerned about their own mental well being they would just stop replying on Twitter and focus on posting news updates there. Or maybe they have now. Idk I canāt see their accountš
Iām talking about the platform itself and not you. ![]()
Moreover, people are on those platforms because they still need to be known (this forum is too niche for their software).
Just like Techlore is on all the major platforms, itās not because he likes (or even posts there himself) but itās for work purposes.
They are quite popular on X the everything platform, so you could say it is working.
Weāre bringing that kind of nonsense marketing here now? ![]()
Letās just stick to Twitter honestly, just like Facebook is still Facebook and not their other cringe one.
Just like eufy is still that and not eufyMake or whatever their latest kink.
I remember when I first encountered graphene os long ago. I was looking for potential phone options and GOS piqued my interest. This was before I cared about my digital privacy, so I ultimately did not choose them not because the developers or social media account runners were hostile, but because I just did not precisely know how GOS would benefit me and my digital privacy. I really doubt that their behavior is somehow damaging to their marketing. The people who know about them know that their product speaks for itself.
What their hostility does factually damage, however, is their networking. They have effectively in the past burned their bridges with @louis_rossmann [1] and @henry-fisher/Techlore[2] as well as various other prominent people and entities in the tech space. This is not good. It doesnt matter whether the veracity their statements are technically true, or that they have a superior product that speaks for itself. All their hostility does is burn bridges, which is probably why it took them so long to get a partnering OEM in the first place lol. That is, if they dont burn that bridge!
Burning those bridges was indeed sad and counter-productive yet it also shows that they do not care about boot-licking, which is quite a strong stance too. ![]()
Being nice or decent in online discourse while sticking to your stances and POVs is not analogous to boot licking as you seem to think (as thatās how I am reading your comment). Thereās a way to use the English language and the vocabulary it affords. In GOSās case, it was misused or abused all the while technically being correct.
It is upto everyone to decide if their etiquette is okay or not, their quality project/product notwithstanding.

Your comments thus far in this thread have all been reading as if youāre still trying to make an excuse for them. Perhaps thatās not the case but Iām just pointing it out as thatās how some people like myself are going to interpret your seemingly neutral comments if one is not familiar with GOS and discourse around their online behavior.
