Skype announces it will close in May

If I understand correctly, Skype used to be a peer-to-peer (+superpeer) technology aimed at the mainstream in the mid-2000s. It seems pretty cool that the founders felt that was the way to go more than two decades ago (or maybe that was actually the norm?). Other than Bittorrent, were there any other peer-to-peer projects that were very popular at the time?
