For people who have a VOIP number with skype, please port it to other providers.
End of an era lol
With the introduction of WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facetime video calls, Skype really did lose relevancy.
I never had the chance to use it
it really is. I remember when ooVoo and Skype was popular
then discord and everyone else came and dethroned those platforms. But man were those the days.
“Users who have Skype Credits will ideally want to use their credits; however, Microsoft says the Skype Dial Pad will remain active via a web interface and inside Teams after the May 5 deadline for people to continue to use those credits.”
ughhhh just give me my money back, i dont want Teams
typical Microsoft lmao
Microsoft shutting down Skype was not on my 2025 bingo card.
The breadsticks are already free, what more do you want?
If I understand correctly, Skype used to be a peer-to-peer (+superpeer) technology aimed at the mainstream in the mid-2000s. It seems pretty cool that the founders felt that was the way to go more than two decades ago (or maybe that was actually the norm?). Other than Bittorrent, were there any other peer-to-peer projects that were very popular at the time?
@privacyisconsent
Original Hamachi was pretty awesome.
Oh my! Yes I remember oovoo and tried inviting a relative onto it without much success.
But they are on signal so that’s good.
What service is the best alternative for calling landlines?
Many comparisons are published in these days. But I haven’t found any that also has privacy as a criterion.
Was Skype private friendly? Did it have like an encryption when you were calling? Which information did they get from a call specific?
Recipient needs a dial-up connection. Before that, you could install chips on receiver and caller. What I really want to say is there is none, use Signal now endorsed by Secretary Defense TUSA
Signal was and is my preferred choice. But when I have to call contacts on the other side of the world in my home country who haven’t installed Signal, I need an alternative. An alternative that allows me to reach landlines. What is the best solution for this?
Viber has that option (Viber Out), but their privacy policy is one of the worst.
Other (better) option is to find VoIP provider that suits you and use standard SIP client (e.g. Linphone). But this could be more expensive, depending on provider and countries you need to call
Agree, Viber is very sneaky in regards of privacy. And Linphone is not for privates. I might have to search for such VoIP providers then.
My understanding is that it will still be possible to call landlines through a “Skype Dial Pad” in Teams. That’s why they don’t refund existing credits.
nope your existing skype funds can be used on Microsoft Teams.
The Irony ik
but yeah you will not be able to purchase any further credits after that, it’s gone.
Personally, I also take it as a trigger to leave Microsoft completely and get rid of another big tech. But first I need to find that new service.
