I’m trying to get at least 3 U.S. VoIP/SIP phone numbers for residential use only on Android for under $60 USD/year total. As for my threat model, I’m trying to lessen my traceability from online randoms and data miners.
My requirements:
Does not require KYC/ID verification
USA phone number
Up to $1.25 USD/month per phone number
Dual functionality
Voice and SMS enabled
Two-way SMS and voice
National mobile number
Won’t block me if I’m using a VPN to connect
Preferences:
Support receiving SMS from short codes
Call encryption
Call conferencing
Call recording
Accepts Monero, other crypto, Privacy.com virtual debit cards, or at least PayPal as payment
Supported by Acrobits Groundwire
Will only be making domestic outbound calls
Doesn’t matter whether it can receive international calls
Disqualified services:
MySudo doesn’t allow purchases on GrapheneOS (even with sandboxed Play Services installed).
Hushed is expensive and SMS/call notifications aren’t very reliable on GrapheneOS (sandboxed Play Services is installed on the same user profile).
VoIP.ms offers excellent pricing but requires KYC/identification.
Not to hi-jack the thread but I’m looking for something similar. I have a home phone (not a mobile phone) that gets phone service (voip) through the local cable provider. Is it possible to replace the cable provided phone service with jmp.chat?
I just bought a bunch of Unifi Talk phones for my house that I’m going to use with probably Voip.ms or Twilio. Maybe I’ll try setting up JMP.chat, but it’s a lot more expensive.
You can definitely replace your home phone plan with JMP.chat (or any SIP provider really), but you might need to replace your phones with VoIP phones, or get an Analog Telephone Adapter. I went with Unifi which sells both options, although they’re pretty expensive. You could get an ATA from Grandstream for about $50 to convert your existing phone: Amazon.com : analog telephone adapter
Unless you already have a VoIP phone? I guess it depends on what hardware your current cable provider gave you. If you can configure your current phone with custom SIP credentials then you’re all set to use JMP.chat:
For advanced use cases, or others who might have reason to need it, JMP does allow users to create a SIP account in your account settings and then login using a SIP client.
Outbound phone calls with SIP are supported. Inbound calls can optionally be routed to the SIP account as well. Sending or receiving messages (i.e. SMS and MMS) using SIP is not supported at this time.
Inbound calls can also be forwarded to any SIP URI.
Are you actually in the US? I’ve signed up for VoIP.ms and haven’t encountered KYC myself so far, but maybe they just haven’t asked yet. Where did you see this was required?
Well I guess it is certainly a YMMV situation, but I’ve now registered and set up a few DIDs with voip.ms without any issue.
I did give them my home address for e-911 purposes since this is for a home landline others will also use, so maybe that helped behind the scenes, but certainly no verification took place.
