I think I’m reading conflicting information about creating a personal Domain for email use. (Some say to use one, some say not)
I’ve already made mistakes by using my main Proton email account, so I am trying to clean that up. This led me to “SimpleLogin” emails. They state that to get a “cleaner” SimpleLogin email address name, you should have a Personal Domain.
Where do you register a privacy related personal domain?
Just pick a tld that allow whois privacy from a registrar that allow whois privacy. You’ll be private from the public since whois query will show registrar whois details instead, not your full name and address and whatnot. I like porkbun for my domains.
Icann required domain registrant to give accurate details when registering a domain and for registrar to verify the details, so registrar would sometimes randomly asked for kyc, asking for a copy of your id and passport. Thats not them not respecting your privacy or whatever people thought it is, its a requirement. Its how domain ownership works.
That being said theres a few proxy registrar out there like njalla. You don’t need kyc with them since they’ll register the domain using their own details and rent it back to you. Don’t go this route for domain you wanted to use for email since you’re not actually the legitimate owner but they are. In case something happens to them, going bust or going bankrupt or something then icann will contact them instead since from icann pov, they’re the actual owner. You wouldn’t want to have your mail on a domain tied to all your digital life for logins and whatnot that might disappear overnight, would you.
