Email accounts creation strategy

Hi friends,

I’m designing the whole email management strategy, especially how I create the accounts according to what I use them for.

At the moment I am only clear about the following:

  • I will use a secure and private email service.
  • I will use an alias service
  • I will use a specific domain for those aliases in which it is not necessary to give any type of data beyond an email and a nickname.

I have doubts about the following:

  • Is it good practice to use your first and last name as part of a personal domain or email account?
  • Would it be good to use the main emails of the secure email services as personal accounts in which if we have to give data such as name and surname, phone, etc?
  • Would it make sense to have a domain for the public profile?

What do you think?

Thanks!

I used to have a domain with my first and last name. I changed it to two made up words that no one would guess. As I feel that it’s more private.

I use mailbox.org and simplelogin.io for the aliases. They now allow you to have a random suffix at the end of you alias to make it more secure. bitwarden.5ue45@mydomain.tld

Thanks for your reply,

That’s my point, but instead of one domain, have two:

  • domain 1: for sites where I don’t have to give personal data.
  • domain 2: for sites where I do have personal data and for personal use

I understand that you manage the domain in SimpleLogin? This way if you change your alias service you don’t lose the email addresses, right?

If you allow me, I would not use references of the services where you use the aliases in the email address. That way you already communicate that you have an account for example in Bitwarden with that email address

I bought my domain form IONOS. It’s easy to set up with the guide from Simple Login.

I’ve never change my alias service, I’d have no idea with moving them to another service. As long as mailbox and simple login are recommended by Privacy guides, I’ll stay with them.

Having aliases that don’t give a clue to what service they’re being used for is great for security. Simple Login allows you to add notes to your aliases.

And what strategy do you use for mail alias with friends, clients and family, wife, husband, children, etc.?

No strategy, direct contact via Signal or Whatsapp for stubborn ones.

Normal texts or WhatsApp I use for family or friends. They aren’t into the privacy journey or care about the data collection.

I recommend using one domain for personal logins, one for private / pseudonymous logins, and one for communication (the domain can contain your name or part of it). Use a separate inbox protected by different credentials for each of these domains, for additional security. Use catch-all addresses for all of these domains, but don’t use something obvious like steam@example.com, obscure the aliases so no one knows any of your other aliases.
