Hi everyone,
This is admittedly a tad off-topic but this community has been helpful in the past so maybe there is some knowledge on this too.
Would you have any recommendation for parental control on stock android? My friend uses an iPhone and their child has an Android. I have briefly read about Family Link, but it requires both parties to have a Google account and, if possible, I would like to recommend a more private alternative (granted the child does have stock Android, but still).
As I understand it, the idea is to limit screen time (mostly), and probably prevent unsuitable content. I assume a healthy discussions is already taking place, but the technological solutions aims at supporting this (especially for the screen time, which may be difficult to monitor/enforce).
Any ideas?
Have you looked into any open source MDM (mobile device managment) options?
Maybe something like…
Last release was 2019 so this is more of an example then a reccomendation.
I had not (not familiar with these apps at all) but thanks a lot for the recommendation. Indeed the 2019 update is troublesome, but otherwise seems to precisely do the job.
And, of course, kudos for the logo with the parent holding back a kicking and screaming toddler!
This one may be worth looking at. I think its self-hostable from what I can tell.
EDIT: As @phnx points out, this lacks Android support. There does seem to be some active open github requests, so this might be an option in the future.
No Android support.
edited. I guess I assumed an MDM would come with…oh, i dont know, mobile device support
Android support is “coming soon” by the looks of it.
Their free tier is basically unusably restrictive though. I seriously doubt it’s suitable for any real use case, although I imagine thats the intention. Being self-hostable + having support for every platform (once Android support arrives) are big pluses though.
The only other one I could find that might be of interest is
I really have to weigh in that you should really not use this.
It seems to be using Google Firebase to store the data, likely unencrypted. It is ran by an individual from Egypt that seems to be using a Gmail address; definitely not a professional organisation.
If anything you will be much better of using Google’s family link itself than some vague random app that uses Google to store it’s data anyway.
Generally must be said there is quite some risk in using an MDM.

I definitely meant it as an example.
Sorry if that was unclear to you or OP.
Did not realize this! Very interesting.
Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. Feel free to keep coming and i will try and do the same after digging deeper.
