Viable Privacy and Security for Child's Phone?

I’ll try to keep this short.

My kid is close to phone age. I use a Pixel with GOS, and my wife uses iPhone. I’m struggling between which device to get the kid.

If I get the kid an iphone, install a messenger like SimpleX, install Ente photos, and make them use a password manager for everything, would you consider that a good compromise?

I could get them a Pixel with GOS, but I like features like Screen Time on iOS. With iOS being closed source, is it possible in theory for the operating system to get access to apps like SimpleX and Ente?

I don’t like carrying around two phones, personal and work phone, so if I switched to iOS, used lockdown mode, didn’t use iCloud, and used Simplex and Ente, would that still be a big privacy compromise?

You really can’t go wrong either way. iOS is one of the most secure operating systems there is, and the parental features I think are really excellent. Personally I would go with an iPhone but I’m biased because I already use mostly Apple stuff.

It’s possible with any operating system, you need to trust it. While it’s not open source, it’s still under a lot of security scrutiny and that kind of thing would’ve surely been found by now.

iOS has great privacy protections especially against third party apps, but it’s lacking in protections against things like Cellebrite. If you trust Apple, then it’s a great operating system for your use case I think.

Thanks for your feedback.

I guess I need to reevaluate my threat model. I enjoy the satisfaction knowing that my data is protected and private against 99% of my concerns. Messages, photos, and browsing is what I want protected for me and my family.
