GOS or IOS

Hey Guys,

I am in the middle of some big changes and want to hear your thoughts. I am about to go all in on Unifi gear, mini servers, home assistant, etc. I am currently an iPhone user. I like the idea of GOS for more privacy and security. I also want to use my phone a lot less this year. I would like to put email on my laptop and have only the basic apps I NEED on my phone. Hopefully like 4 or 5. I know I can delete a lot of apples pre-installed apps. Am I thinking about this too hard? Should I just stick with apple?

Thanks!

If you have an option to get GrapheneOS and use that on a Pixel you already have or will purchase, then use that. It is better than iOS on many fronts.

Thank you. Even if most of family and friends 90% are on iOS?

Do you use any Apple’s apps/services that you can’t live without or with an alternative? If yes, then move to GOS. If you absolutely need to use any of Apple’s services, then you’ll have to stick with iOS. So you’ll need to decide for yourself.

But from a privacy and security POV, GOS is best.

Depends on your threat model. If you are concerned about end-to-end-encrypted communications but can’t convince your family to switch over to Signal or another app , daily-driving GOS might not be the perfect fit for you.

Although RCS has made it easier for folks to switch due to greater quality-of-life features, it still is a bit buggy (and not E2EE) for those communicating between Android and Apple. GOS doesn’t implement RCS by default; you would need to install something like Google Messages which opens up another can of worms.

If you don’t think this is a concern, GOS is the far superior alternative. Nothing wrong staying with iOS if you rely on the Apple ecosystem though.

Is it possible to get a cheap Pixel 8A and keep your iPhone for now?

Just to add to this, if you allow texts on multiple profiles the RCS messangers typically do not work outside of the Owner profile on GOS atleast, from my experience.

What? How is that relevant, you realize that they meant GrapheneOS (GOS). You can run any real private chat app on GrapheneOS. OP also said they want to use their apps less, they can with GOS, disable all bloat and distractions and use an alternative launcher that makes all icons look boring.

RCS is not worth it all.

I am very much aware of that. The main issue is that their family members are mostly iOS users and may not be willing to switch away from iMessage. If OP is concerned about losing E2EE, they may not be willing to switch. Otherwise, they may benefit a lot from GrapheneOS

Idk how missing 1 feature is worth not using the world’s most secure and private OS.

You do bring up a good point!

That may be possibility!

I dont think @KevPham is saying that.

I think its fair to point out that feature is missing and allow OP or whomever else is making that decision to weigh the value of that feature based on their own threat model.

I am also bummed about losing the family share features…

Well, you either stay in the ecosystem, or you don’t. Can’t have iOS conveniency on Android, if your family uses iOS solutions.

The question is more personal than it is technical - do you stay because of your family, or do you leave the ecosystem to enhance your own privacy?

We cannot possibly help you with that decision.

Thats for sure true.

Has anyone here gone down the same road?

I’m fortunate enough to have an Android family so… Sorry not me

Obviously Graphene os it’s still Android at heart and it’s the most Private And Secure option available unless you can’t use it or you love Apple Shiny Technology :open_mouth::melting_face:
