More GOS questions

Thanks everyone for your help these last couple of days with my questions. I am
Also wondering who all uses GOS as a daily driver and who uses IOS? For those who are GOS what is going to be the biggest hurdle for an IOS user? The apps that I need are Reolink, Tonal, signal, and maybe a calendar app. It would be great to have those all work with no issues.

Let me know your thoughts!

You shouldn’t have any issues with those apps, the main thing that people have issues with currently is banking apps. Some banking apps like Revolut have been blocking custom operating systems recently. (This is due to Google’s Play Integrity API which custom operating systems can’t pass)

The biggest change you’ll feel from switching from iOS to GrapheneOS is that there is significantly less bloatware and unnecessary features. It’s a lot more minimalistic than iOS, which is good because it reduces the attack surface of the device.

Years ago I was on android, my phone got destroyed so I had to use my moms old iphone 4, then went back to google. Make sure you look up how to get apple to release your sms from iMessages or you won’t be able to receive text.

I never used GOS, I only hope for everyone who does sake it’s better than the degoogled options. Those just about drove me crazy.

I switched from iOS to using GOS full time. While I still have the iOS as a secondary device, that remains off for most of the time, my transition has been fairly smooth to be honest. I use Reolink Cameras but I have the app installed via Aurora Store in the Private Spaces. I use a combination of Fossify Calendar + Davx5 to access my shared calendar with my partner who uses an iOS device. Molly (fork) instead of Signal for the extra features like backups, scheduled messaging etc. I’d be lying if I said I don’t miss the iOS calendar for its ease of use, but that how Apple gets you hooked to their service and make it difficult to move on. Not sure about Tonal but if it is available in App Store it can be downloaded from Aurora Store or hell, install the Sandboxed Google Play Services and it will be work just fine. As @jordan said banking app incompatibility and glitches are what you should be expecting, other than that I don’t see any other big hurdles. Apple makes some services work so seamlessly with other iOS devices, so if you have family members or friends who are in the ecosystem that could be a problem unless they are willing to switch to alternatives.

Oh wow that awesome! Is there a reason that some people are not fans of aurora store?

Aurora Store can be unreliable because Google sometimes blocks Aurora Store’s anonymous accounts that it uses to download the apps.

it’s not as bad as it used to be, you can do it easily in settings by deregistering your number from imessage yourself once you move your sim over to a non-iPhone

I use GOS as a daily driver. I guess that the biggest hurdle if you are deep in the ecosystem will be to have to recreate a setup made up of a lot of different pieces. Not Apple Photos, Notes and Keychain but Notesnook/Ente/Proton Pass for instance.

Ty for informing me!

At the time it angered me so much I didn’t touch another ios device for almost 5 years and honestly wouldn’t even consider the iphone for about 10.

When you move from iOS to GrapheneOS, it’s like moving from a rented apartment that you don’t really own or have complete control of with some absolutely random arbitrary restrictions that the landlord came up with to moving into your own house that you completely own, control, and can do whatever the f you want.

While the latter seems a lot better than the former, it’s not always the case. If you lived in jail half of your life, yes, your freedom and control are restricted, and you can’t do whatever you want, but at least you get shelter and food and don’t have to worry or think about these things. When you get out of jail, nobody is going to hold your hand and take care of your shelter, food, and everything else, now everything is in your hands, and you’re the one responsible for all the decisions, and some people just don’t like that and feel overwhelmed.

If you want to have complete control over your device, switch to GrapheneOS, if you would rather Apple make the majority of decisions when it comes to your OS, apps, and services, then stay in the ecosystem.
