Hey everyone, I am here to take your suggestions. I am searching for a privacy-focused email provider.
The mail address will be used for online signups and official signups so no need of end-to-end mail encryption which only work under same email provider.
Providers to be avoided: Proton, Tuta
Proton:
They are providing services in each category. Even if I buy their Mail Plus plan, which is their mail-only plan, I get 15GB of cloud storage just like Google. 15GB of storage for only mail is difficult to digest. As I got the storage for nearly free with that plan, maybe someday I’ll use it for storing my data. Also, I don’t want to keep all my data in one place.
Additionally, their account creation process is also a big drawback for me. The account we create in protonmail or any of their services is actually a whole proton account, which can be used in their other services as well. So, all things are internally connected.
Tuta: Already had paid plan, so finding an alternative.
Reading your post and critically thinking about it - it is my opinion that I think even you don’t know what you want and why you want what you think you want.
I suspect that’s why you still haven’t received a single response with 55 views (as I write this).
Please read your own post, think about it and what you want and why, and ask again. I’m sorry - I find this to be a low quality post because it doesn’t even mention where you’re coming from with thinking like this and why.
Weird that you’re specifically looking for providers with in-house app since those are usually the problematic one with missing features and whatnot vs providers with open protocol of imap where you got hundreds of different mail client to choose from.
Apart from proton and tuta, mailfence and fastmail got their in-house app too.
I didn’t want to say that. I mean, with the Mail Plus plan, I get 15GB of storage, and that can’t be filled with only email, so suppose I have 10GB left in my Proton account, so someday I need to store some data on the cloud in an emergency. In this situation, what will I do?
Sign up for a new cloyd provider or use the existing Proton Drive.
So, even today I say I’ll not use any other services of Proton except Mail. Still, there are some possibilities I’ll
Thanks for your suggestion. I have not had any big problems with the email client, but they are too complicated. I discussed the incident with the Thunderbird mail app. Previously, I used the FairEmail app, which had too many options to understand. I can still use the app if that has better user privacy and the organisation is trustworthy.
May be I heard FastMail is not encrypted, and I read Mailfence did not even encrypt mail at rest.
Can you suggest me some good privacy-focused options if I don’t need the official mobile app?
A strong password is a must-have. Those lines are copied from a post in this forum; probably the topic was about email privacy.
Emails are now used for account authentication, so if I used my Gmail to sign up, then Google may not know the password or my activities on that website but know that I have an account on that website.
Suppose I use Gmail for signing up in this forum; now Google knows that. It will be easier to create user profiles as simple people (I mean, people who don’t care about their privacy) never sign up for these types of websites.
In that case I recommend Fastmail to you. It’s not encrypted email but it’s paid and is private and their apps on mobile is great. They also have a great web UI experience that rivals Protons’.
Also clarify what you mean by you don’t like Proton’s direction? As far as I know, they have don’t nothing wrong that’s deal breaker worthy.
I am ready to use Addy.io after I choose a mail provider. Previously, I planned to go with SimpleLogin, but they are now offering a Proton pass along with a paid plan, and I don’t want that integration.
Yeah, I heard about Fastmail. But this is not zero-knowledge encrypted, which means the provider can see my data and even access it (I guess). I don’t need the encryption that only works between users under the same provider, but I also need that encryption where the providers can’t see my data.
Does it offer unlimited aliases with their paid plan? If yes, I’ll use it once my Startmail subscription ends.
So you want encryption at rest. mailbox.org support adding your own keys for at rest encryption. Its popular and even recommended on pg.
Theres also disroot.org that did the same with their lacre implementation but the encryption is still in alpha stage, got to contact them for activation.
codamail.com support the same at rest encryption via your own keys too judging by their feature list but i haven’t try them.
Or if you want, they do e2e when sending and receiving too via the typical pgp.
Those aren’t my recommendation though, just merely mentioning them based on your requirements. Its up to you to judge them futher by reading their tos and privacy policy.
Encryption at rest with own keys are rare among mail providers. You’re pretty limited in the choice here.
You didn’t mention zero knowledge encryption in your clarifying second comment.
See this is why I said even I don’t think you know why you want what you want in my first comment because you’re not clarifying your requirements in full.
Also, check out Fastmail yourself first before continuing to ask basic questions about it here.
I used FastMail, but they use your data which I don’t like. Now I’m using Startmail for my business. I like their secure business email so far and I think I’m not changing it for a while.
