I am looking for good encryption local-only folder tool.
I took a look on VeraCrypt but… I tried to find Linux install guide, but I can’t find it.
Official one for Microsoft (evil corp): https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Beginner%27s%20Tutorial.html
I run Linux
Secondly, how really secure VC? I need to store some really important information (journalism) and in my situation it MUST be encrypted and treated as highly classified information. It is really important.
I am journalist, so this is highly important n
Also… I read somewhere that VC supports chipper cascading. Is it true?
I really don’t have time to try everything myself, as if I will mess something up, I will be in whole ocean of trouble.
If you can recommend anything better, or help with this one I will be very pleased
And please, no “cloud” solutions. It is too sketchy for this exact situation.
Another alternative is Cryptomator that works local, on any external hard disk independent of the OS you use on or change between, and on or through any cloud storage. This is a very popular and a highly reputable encryption tool.
And since you don’t have a lot of time to try stuff, use this. It’s simpler and easiest to use with very strong encryption. And it’s fully FOSS.
The exact steps will vary depending on which specific Linux distribution you’re using. I haven’t used Linux in a while but I think it should be as simple as downloading the correct GUI installer for your distro and running it as you would a Windows executable. If that doesn’t work, I’d ask for installation steps (mention which exact distro you’re using) on the VeraCrypt Forums or on r/VeraCrypt.
VeraCrypt is widely respected and recommended by experts. As Privacy Guides points out, it has also been audited. Nothing is guaranteed to be perfect but VeraCrypt is one of the best options if you need an encrypted vault.
You’re much more likely to suffer from a security failure by not practising good OPSEC rather than experiencing an issue with VeraCrypt, so prioritize getting proper infosec training and advice. I will warn you to not depend on self-taught security before dealing with extremely sensitive journalism. Only subject matter experts can properly train and advise you on how to protect your sources.
Cryptomator explicitly states that their focus is encrypting for cloud storage. There are significantly better options like veracrypt which supports key files/piv cards
I don’t think you have read its website enough. They only market it that way.
You can use it for local encryption too. Even encrypting external hard disks or small flash drives. Kathy, I’m afraid you’re highly misinformed here. Furthermore, it works the same way on local system or in your cloud. Its the same level of privacy and security it offers.
Your comment also reads like a claim. Please be mindful of that. For what OP is asking, Cryptomator is perfectly fine and does its job and more.
By that logic, snow boots are not made to be worn on the beach, but you can if you wanted to. Still does it’s job protecting your feet from the elements.
Point is, just because it’s not a focus strictly speaking, does not mean it does not do its job for what OP is asking. They did ask for our suggestions and this one is pretty darn good.
