Any thoughts on FileRun?

Hi,

did anyone ever use FileRun ? I’m looking for a lighter alternative for Nextcloud, and FileRun often appears in my research. Official website is https://filerun.com/ and the repo seems on GitHub.
From what I saw features includes :

  • Self-hosting
  • Office suite
  • Simple setup
  • Standards protocols

I didn’t see any mention of E2EE however. Any thought? Could it be worth testing for self-hosting?

FYI I just skimmed through the GitHub org and it doesn’t seem like the server software is open-source? At least, it doesn’t seem to be in the list of repos owned by the org. It looks like there are just a bunch of clients, some libraries, and Docker setups.

I wont recommend Nextcloud because my experience with them feels bad. More so as they have this “plugins ecosystems” that does not improve the bloat.

My suggestion is to use separate services that are best in their class:

  • TrueNAS for NAS/SMB/File.
  • Immich for pictures
  • Radicale for contacts and calendar sync

And so on. That way if Immich breaks, It wont take out Radicale. If Nextcloud breaks (and it does frequently), you lose access to everything.
