Hello,
I am looking for an alternative to Evernote.
I am considering one from the privacy guides suggestions: Notesnook, Joplin, StandardNotes.
I have seen many youtube videos and reddit posts regarding these services. But none of them were recent so wanted to get the opinions of people in this community.
If you guys have been using any of these then please tell me which one is better.
Thank you
I like Notesnook better for no reason other than the developer codes like AI running on a 20,000 H200 GPU cluster (besides, loved their massive recent price drop from $50/yr to $10/yr?! ).
I would just use it for day to day stuff and a lillte bit of college work. I thought of using an open source service so didnāt try obsidian but will give it a try if notjing else works. Thanks for the suggestion
Cryptpad also seems nice
Yes. Notesnookās development is very active and thatās the thing I like about this service. I always love to try new things. How did you get that price? I only see student offers. Could you please tell me if there are any other offers? Thanks for your reply
The pricing page must show $9.99/yr to everyone (recently mirrored link for ref: Pricing plans | Notesnook)? Ah, youāre right. It is the āeducationā plan (I teach post-graduate, so I count I guessā¦).
May be Notesnookās lead developer @thecodrr can hook you up (:
You can try to use them all all and see what works for you. I used to use Standard Notes but feature creep drove me out (as well as eggs in one basket issue with Proton).
I am currently on a self hosted instance of Joplin via TrueNAS. It seems to work well enough on its baseline app (there are also plugins but I dont want or need them). Syncing is a bit of an issue though.
Obsidian is curious because I think it can allow me to do Zettelkasten style notes that are supposed to be better for structuring notes.
Notesnook is interesting as well. I think for cloudsync, they could be better and cheaper than Standard Notes.
Far better than evernote. Switched to it and not looked back.
Notes are in markdown and thus no need to worry about them being held to ransom. Plus you can import evernote files into jopin and they show up exactly the same way.
Another vote for Joplin. The app itself is very good, very intuitive to use, with lots of features. In my case, PC-to-phone syncing took some setting up with Syncthing. Standard Notes is much easier in this regard, but itās very bare bones if not paid for.
As another alternative to Obsidian or Notion, thereās Anytype. As far as I understand it, itās not truly FOSS, as their license restricts commercial use. Regardless, Iāve switched to it from Joplin and quite enjoyed it. It does take some time getting used to (the same with Obsidian or Notion), and whether itās actually worth using productivity-wise heavily depends on your workflow.
Regarding Notesnook, Iād rather not pay for a subscription to get all the features when completely free alternatives are available.
Iāll check out SiYuan, thank you!
Notesnook has the best price to performance ratio if sync is something you want without having to do any tedious setup.
Personally I love Obsidian, and I am able to keep my whole vault on a flashdrive, meaning I donāt need any sync service and only have to take my USB with me. The power of plugins and theming on Obsidian make it so comfortable to use, and itās the only notetaking app that accomodates my need for conveniently and quickly writing math (LaTeX/MathJaX) and chemfig+ SMILES rendering.
