1Password increasing its pricing

1Password has followed Bitwarden and has increased subscriptions pricing.

In an email sent to users, the password manager says it will raise the price of its individual plan from $3.99 / month ($35.88 / year) to $4.99 / month ($47.88 / year), and that its family plan is going from $6.95 / month ($59.88 / year) to $7.99 / month ($71.88 / year).

It makes me so so glad to keep supporting and always pushing Mullvad to people interested in VPNs. They are truly the greats when it comes to making and running a company in the best way possible and respecting their users with the same price promise for so long even though I’m sure their they have seen rising costs too.

Keepass and Syncthing is an amazing combination. Price never goes up, donate what you want.

The cost is know-how and inconvenience. It’s never just “free” as you want it.

I don’t find it inconvenient at all and is very easy to set up.

Good.

Not everyone will feel that way, however.

I wouldn’t expect everyone to switch, that’s just silly.

I’m only presenting an option to cloud based password managers that is reliable and secure.

If you haven’t heard already, 1Password is increasing their prices. Below is the reply from their AI bot if you send an email to their support. I asked for human support, and I received same reply 4 times in a row, and after I cancelled my subscription finally someone real replied.

There is also a huge discussion in Reddit about it.

Update Regarding 1Password Pricing

Hey there! :waving_hand:

Thanks for taking the time to contact the 1Password Customer Experience Team regarding the price increase for Individual and Family plans. This is an automated message to help answer some of the most common questions.

Why is the price increasing?

We’re updating our pricing to reflect the growing value of 1Password, while staying true to our mission of making security simple and accessible. Our pricing has remained largely unchanged since 2016.

New features that have made 1Password more powerful include:

  • Automatic saving and filling

  • Enhanced Watchtower alerts

  • AI-powered item naming

  • Expanded recovery options

When will the price increase take effect?

The new pricing will apply at your next subscription renewal that occurs on or after March 27, 2026.

What are the new prices?

SHOCKED BY AI CUSTOMER SERVICE

Yeah, this is terrible news. I found out about it 2 days late when I saw the email in my inbox. I am shocked that you got an AI when you tried to contact support, because as far as I can remember, that has never happened to me. I have always talked with a real person. The last time was in January. I have also never encountered any AI features by 1Password, so I have no idea what they are talking about.

TOO MANY BUGS

Since the launch of 1Password 8, there have been many bugs with the app, and many of them have not been fixed. I personally do not buy for a second their argument that they’ve introduced lots of cool new features that justify this hire. They haven’t.

THIS IS TEXTBOOK ENSHITTIFICATION

IMO, they are doing it because they are VC funded and got hundreds of millions of VC cash that investors want a return on. I don’t know how companies like Proton work, but it is my understanding that password managers like 1Password make most of their money from businesses, so why are they burdening us regular users with the cost? This is textbook enshittification.

On a side note, I hope that in the future we can have honest conversations about enshittification when privacy companies do it. Because I have noticed that some people don’t like the criticism when it is directed at privacy companies that have high esteem from the community. 1Password is obviously not one of those companies. It’s not even a privacy company. It’s a security company. Anyway…

DON’T KNOW WHAT I WILL DO.

Why did you decide to immediately unsubscribe?

I still have some time left on my sub but haven’t decided yet if I will leave. I am heavily leaning toward leaving. We should all boycott 1Password. My issue is that I have yet to find a replacement that matches 1Password in UI & UX. Proton Pass is the only alternative I am willing to consider; they are not cutting it. I don’t know what I will do.

I want us to send a loud message to 1Password so they reverse this stupid decision.

Last year, I got an email where they announced they were going to add tax to the pricing, which meant that in most regions your price would increase. It was $40+ dollars a month. I never shared my country with 1Password, but I am guessing because of the provenance of my credit card or PayPal account, they thought I deserved to be taxed. Thankfully, all I had to do was change my country in the settings to avoid the tax.

PROTON PASS IS TAKING TOO LONG TO CATCH UP

But yeah, I fear my only prayer at this point is to hope for Proton Pass to catch up before my subscription expires. Also, to my knowledge, 1Password doesn’t do monthly subscriptions. But if they do, I might cancel mine, and maybe once every 3 months, pay for one month of premium and cancel.

Why not just use bitwarden?

What do you not like about it? It’s a well rounded product today.

I have Proton Duo, shared with a friend. I asked Proton about how can I include my family members without getting Proton Family, and they told me below.

Please be advised that having multiple paid subscriptions under one account is, unfortunately, still not possible at the moment.
This means that if you switch your subscription to the Pass Family plan, your current Proton Duo plan will be canceled, and you will only retain access to the free features of Proton Mail moving forward.

Additionally, it is not possible for one of your family members to be subscribed to the Pass Family plan and then invite you to join while you are still on Proton Duo.
This is because it’s not allowed to have two active subscriptions under the same account at the same time.

As an alternative workaround, you can consider the following setup:

One of your family members can subscribe to the Pass Family plan and become the admin.

That admin can then invite the other family members (except you) to join the Pass Family plan.
https://proton.me/support/pass-family-add-user

You can remain on your Proton Duo plan, since the Proton Duo plan already includes all premium Proton Pass features.

Once everyone else has joined the Pass Family plan, you will all be able to share vaults with each other, without needing to change your own plan. (if you would like)

So, I skipped Proton and went to Bitwarden. They didn’t give me a discount but they used my existing Premium sub price as pro rata and switched me to Family plan.

I am mostly done with the migration, only few passkeys and attachments which I most likely missed left. I have time until June with 1Password but I have no desire to support a company with such bad business practices and customer support experience, so I bought BW Family plan immediately.

Most of you know me already that I was a 1Password supporter, but this price change and ignoring customer feedback was the last straw for me. They are sponsoring Formula 1 and yet they are complaining about costs. Also, they implemented AI which no one asked. They ignored bugs which are still there, like boot time crash bug, or translations, or login bugs. And they replaced their customer service with AI, which is pretty much useless.

IMO, despite its flaws, 1Password is still the best password manager when it comes to UI & UX.
I think Proton Pass’s UI & UX are pretty darn good, but because I am used to 1Password, there are still a lot of features missing. I’ve shared most of them here.

One thing I did not explicitly mention in the link above, is that I would also like Proton Pass to sync the desktop app to the browser extensions, like 1Password does. I primarily use the desktop app. When I unlock the app on desktop, I am automatically unlocked in every browser extension. That is super handy to me. First because I don’t want to have to type my password multiple times within seconds of each other on my computer, but also because I use multiple browsers simultaneously. This feature is a must for me.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about earlier and one of my biggest issues with Proton:

I don’t see the enshittification from Proton here.

Please clearly elaborate on how exactly it is that.

I have discussed it at length here, here, here, and here.

I’d also appreciate a TLDR version. If not, I’ll check it out when I have the time. Thanks for those links. They are long discussions.

Here is the TL;DR from the first link:

In short, for me, removing features that were once free, or removing them from a tier you already paid for is enshittification because you are deliberately making a product worse to compel users to upgrade.

Similarly, not allowing users to pay for multiple stand-alone services that a company offers just to pressure them to upgrade to the highest paid tier is also enshittification. Because when users are paying for 2 products instead of one, you are still getting their money. But because you want more, you force them between two choice they don’t want: an expensive one, or one that offers a subpar experience.
