Well…that’s not creepy at all. Even though this service is only offered through a Wyze subscription (and their cameras), I wonder if this trend will spread through other smart home camera products.
It seems to me that the trend in the smart home is going the other way, i.e. more local control (think Matter), but how that applies to cameras is hard to say. There is, of course, HomeKit Secure Video, but besides that, I don’t know of any good alternative for the Android ecosystem. Obviously, vendors like Eufy exist, but we all know how trustworthy they aren’t.
Definitely agree that AI in the cloud and cameras in the cloud should be an absolute non-starter, or at least it is for me.
I suppose it’s nice for TheVerge to include the disclaimer at the bottom, but I would’ve liked for them to at least mention the implications of cloud AI features, especially given Wyze’s track record. Just having the notice at the bottom feels inadequate to me.
Agreed. Besides HomeKit, I am not sure if there are any reliable and private “smart” home devices that don’t require self-hosting on Android. More reason to do so I guess!
With the state of modern journalism and all, I am not surprised Verge just linked their past articles. Missed opportunity for them
