At this point I think PG should only focus on providing info on tools they recomme d and that are at least respectable to the user.
Windows is an absolute mess so keeping up with accurste info with how often it changes is not worth it or even possible. Plus the company jor the software respects the user so that itself should be a non starter if you ask me.
The argument that people still need to use it and therefore there should still be some info on it almost doesn’t apply anymore. Only highly select pieces of software warrant using the god awful OS and is almost wholly a choice at this point, not a necessity for your computing needs.
I disagree. For example I need to use Windows because the software I need to use only runs on Windows and Windows/macOS.
I really would like to use Linux but I can’t afford a secondary device for personal use and just run the special software on the Windows device.
And I think a lot of people are at this point.
Then use a Mac and get Parallels on it to use the Windows software you want. That’s a legitimate solution most do not go with for some reason.
Or simply use macOS. Getting off Windows is going to be a lot better.
Or you can dual boot with Linux.
As I said. Some programs only run on Windows. It’s frustrating but the reality.
And I could try running pretty resource intensive things in a VM but time has shown that this could lead to problems. And if you would give me the money to buy an insanely overpriced device, then sure I could try it.
Have you try to make your own modify windows ISO ?
I could share mine if you want, I did it with ntlite. I have made one version for windows 11 LTSC and also windows 10 LTSC.
Both come with no Copilot, no Microsoft Online account, no location service…
What happens when you install updates?
Good questions.
For windows 10 and 11 LTSC, the only updates are security updates. So the privacy aspect remain the same.
For the normal windows 11, it depend. Sometime new privacy invasive features can be added at the same time of updates.
If I really had to choose a non-Linux OS, I would pick Windows over Apple. At least that way I will not be locked in with a desktop vendor.
Only for 10. 11 gets Quality updates, which may include features like Recall. By the way, they’ve already added Recall to LTSC.
The reason behind Windows guides not having any progress is because nobody that is capable of writing them uses Windows or wants to use it for daily activities, except for maybe gaming. If I’m not mistaken, pretty much all of the PG team uses Linux and macOS, and some even use their iPad as a computer replacement.
Even if someone did daily drive Windows and made a perfect guide for it, that guide might become worthless in a week, which would require constant updates and work because of how privacy-invasive and user-hostile Windows is.
Not only that, but it’s also becoming an absolute cancer to use even without all the privacy and security issues. Examples would be them breaking the Terminal, Notepad, Windows login, and Outlook. They even managed to break the Start Menu.
There are three options for those who are forced to use Windows and want to improve their privacy and security:
