I use kDrive from Infomaniak. Doesn’t have E2EE (but an encrypted vault will come later) but their privacy policy is good enough. Based in Switzerland. Pretty good pricing (6€/month for 2 TB) and great customer support. Also, they are very environment friendly.
Started with Tresorit but too expensive, happy with Proton Drive but uses Ente for photos
I’ve been using cloud storage strictly as a backup measure for only my most critical things. I pair that with Cryptomator and just go with the cheapest available. Whatever their privacy policy and ToS are become irrelevant.
I actually wanted to provide an update and say that I decided to host Nextcloud on my home server, and I mainly use it as my primary cloud storage. I have been happy with the experience and have encountered no issues.
Try Proton Drive. There’s photo backups but the feature is only available on Android atm.
I have been using Ente for my photo storage and backups.
Ente should reconsider their pricing strategy. Why would I pay more than double that I am paying to Google One and Apple One Premium, let’s say for 2 TB? Yes, they are privacy oriented but it shouldn’t cost that much, right?
You have 2TB of picture and videos ??
That is my total storage, using around 800ish GB with family.
Google One is a double tier model where you countine to pay with your data. Idk about Apple.
I am not sure how I pay with my data? My yearly bill says I am paying to them with my credit card
Edit. It might be the case for free users. I think it was 15 GB or something like that, but not for paid users.
Actually I am paying for 100gb, even though that’s not a plan listed on their website. So maybe you could contact them?
My point is that considering cloud storage costs and dev cost, this wouldn’t be a sustainable business. But when you consider the saving costs in finding and buying images for AI training, as well as (potentally) selling your data-- then the business makes more sense.
When I read Photos privacy policy, it wasnt very clear on what it would not do with your pictures.
My needs are simple. Me and my family members took photos and videos from our Apple devices and upload them to the cloud. No need for editing or adjusting. Just save them as they are, tag the person(s) if they are known, and add the location to the taken photos and videos. Save them as they are, no compression is needed. I want to access them from my devices and from my Windows desktop, as well as browsers.
If Proton can mature their Drive product within few months, then I can save around 100 Euro per year for cancelling Google One 2 TB. I won’t cancel Apple One Premier tbh, even though it costs a lot, like 34,95 Euro per month.
Edit.
Partner Sharing not available for Apple Photos is wrong
As for Apple E2EE
I find it perplexing that Proton Drive continues to receive recommendations, particularly given its apparent lack of maturity and range of functions compared to other options. Despite my current subscription to Proton Drive, persistent synchronization errors on the desktop application, which resulted in the loss of some files, compelled me to revert to using Tresorit. Furthermore, I frequently encounter difficulties decrypting my Proton Drive files on mobile devices when accessed via the respective OS’s files app.
At present, I do not consider Proton Drive to be a reliable or effective product. I hope that Proton will address these issues in future updates, at which point I may consider giving it another try. Notably, the latest updates have already resulted in a discernible improvement.
Apple does have an option for E2EE which is called “Advanced Data Protection”, but the disadvantges that brings is that the metadata is not encrypted.
I wish that too. I am already on Family plan and paying a lot of money to them but apart from privacy perspective, all of their products are still not yet matured and development is too slow.
After my 2 year sub ends and their apps don’t receive major overhaul and updates, I will most likely switch to M365 Business Standard or Premium.
Reach them, at team@ente.io or at Github, they are very responsive.
