Encrypted Storage

Hello. I came across three encrypted storage solutions suggested by a Reddit user.

What does Privacy Guides think of Mega, Cryptomator and Filen?

Hi Jonah! Thank you for the reply.

What would be the difference on choosing between a “cloud storage” and “encryption software” platform?

I have moved on to Ente to store all of my media and I love the platform. I’m now looking for a place to store my documents/files.

If you want to use convential storage because you already have this anyway you can encrypt it locally and store remote securely. If you don’t have this then I would always recommend to go for any of the cloud storage suggestions.

Personaly I use proton drive. This is probably what you are looking for as well. Tressorit isn’t as well integrated but I have used it in the past.

Also please search the forum before asking questions. This entire thread is a duplicate of Filen or Mega or Proton Drive

Hi, my apologies for not using the search feature better.

I don’t exactly need another VPN (everyone and their mother seems to be releasing a VPN) because I have one already, Mullvad and I use a password manager called Bitwarden. I’m aware that I’m not compelled to use ProtonVPN, ProtonPass and Mega VPN if I upgrade further, but something bothers me about having all those extras and not using it.

After looking into Cryptomator and Peergos, it seems like it won’t work out for me because I need a storage solution on my mobile device.

Cryptee and Filen are both a lot more affordable for me, although I’m getting some concerns after reading this thread about Filen. Seeing that Cryptee is more web-based compatible, that might not be a solution for me either.

I’m on the fence about Mega due to the added VPN, but it might be my only solution. How come Mega isn’t recommended by Privacy Guides?

You don’t need to sign up for all of proton, it is possible to only subscribe to proton drive.

Personally haven’t looked at them in years. Doubt they meet our requirements.

They don’t exactly have the best reputation MEGA fixes critical flaws that allowed the decryption of user data

PG works based on recommendations from the community, so someone has to bring it forward to be evaluated and then a discussion starts on all the requirements and if it is worth adding. That just hasn’t happend.

Hey, thanks for being patient with me. I just navigated through their website, and it looks like I found the Drive Plus 200GB solution fits my needs perfectly.

It looks like I can’t purchase additional storage for my Proton Drive space.

Just upgrade your account to Drive Plus or better.

In my opinion, Tresorit offers a better pricing, although I am uncertain whether the 1TB storage plan aligns with your specific needs. Additionally, I perceive Tresorit to be significantly more mature compared to Proton Drive. And it works just fine on mobile.

Only problem with Tresorit appart from pricing is their Linux app. They have the merit of having one, but the UX is horrible and feel rushed, many corners cut.

I don’t know what people need, but I was using it for a few years on Linux, and it served me quite well. IMO, the best choice for encrypted cloud storage, if you need one.

The only thing I don’t like about it (and same is with many others) is that business plans don’t include large common storage, but still per person quotas, and that makes no sense for work purposes. Though at one point I contacted them about it, and their support told me it would be possible to organize it that way.

Didn’t you notice some weird things, for example the “Newbie to do list” had 10 items but half were empty, in the settings section I couldn’t reach the proxy setting due to a scaling error.

TBH, I don’t remember, but it might be there was that thing with “to do list”, though that doesn’t effect programs purpose.
Regarding proxy settings, I didn’t need it, so I don’t know if it works properly or not

Hello, people of Privacy Guides.

Thank you all so much for the replies since I last visited.

I have decided to store all of my media with Ente, it is fantastic. As for documents, etc. I have not found a solution just yet.

I genuinely don’t need more than Mail Plus from Proton and Tresorit is on my radar. I still have mixed feelings about Mega, and I’ve already decided not to go with Filen.
