Voice anonymization + removing audio file details

Hello !

I’d like to remove all/most of the private info in a voice clip of mine. What solutions are out there that are private themselves? I see a lot of AI services that do that - either in a cloud (red flag I assume?) or to download and have it on your device…

To add some important information:

  • I want to make my voice unrecognizable
  • I speak about a lot of people, so I use their names (and rarely other private info about them)… are there programs that “beep” those automatically, or even better give them aliases?
  • I’d like to remove those file details as well (meta data, right?)
  • It is quite long, so I’ve hoped there might me an automatic solution, but if not I’ll put in some work I guess :frowning:

Transcribe it to text with something like Vibe GitHub - thewh1teagle/vibe: Transcribe on your own! (or other OpenAI Whisper based tools)

Edit the text.

Publish the text?

Or convert the text back to speech if you have to. There are dozens of local models for this. Often based on OpenAI Whisper.

I’m not aware of any automated tools that can do this for you. Traditionally, this is done through a voice changer while you record yourself talk, or someone like a newsroom video editor will do it post-production.

Audacity is free and really easy to use as long as you follow a tutorial. You should consider manually editing the video clip with it to add in bleeps or distort the vocals. Just keep in mind that what matters is not what the voice sounds like, but the words you are using. Someone can identify you just from the way you talk, like recognizing certain words, phrases, and other habits.
