I’m aware that Firefox on Android is not recommended, mostly because of security issues when browsing the web. I use UBO hard mode, which fixes that.
I don’t want to switch on desktop as I like Firefox. The main reason I also use it on mobile is bookmarks syncing. I don’t want to have 2 sets of bookmarks and I do need my bookmarks on both desktop and Android.
I’m still curious though. For people using Firefox on Desktop and another browser on Android, do you not care about bookmarks? Or is there some sort of solutions you use?
How many times do people think about this? Just because the Gecko-based browsers is less secure on Android doesn’t mean it is bad. Unless you are a person with a high threat model, I just suggest using Firefox (or rather Ironfox) on mobile and you will be just fine.
I use Brave on mobile. I personally do not care for bookmarks. If I need to bookmark something, I do it in my notes app.
Hi. I use Firefox as my default browser on desktop because I love containers, and it’s a privacy feature that Chromium based browsers don’t have.
I personally do not care for bookmarks on Android. The main browser I use on mobile is Firefox Nightly, which, like Mullvad, is an ephemeral browser that automatically deletes everything every time you close it.
I have Brave, Duck Duck Go, and the regular Firefox installed on my Android phone, but I rarely use them, and I have no bookmarks saved on them or any accounts synced. The only reason I have the regular Firefox installed it’s because AFAIK, it’s the only Android browser that had a reader view feature, that allows you to read articles without the clutter. On iOS there’s Safari for that, but Safari is exclusive to Apple devices.
All that being said, I don’t use Firefox for readanymore, more so I should probably uninstall it. I use Raindrop instead, which privacy wise is not ideal, but there are unfortunately no E2EE alternatives.
I use Vanadium on Android, as far as syncing bookmarks go I do it using Standard Notes which I have on my PC, tablet and phone. Every time I add a bookmark in SN I copy and paste it in the browser on whatever device I need to add it to and bookmark it that way. It’s tedious but the best option I could think of.
This is a pretty frustrating thing for me. I like Mozilla and Firefox a lot and I would love to use it exclusively on all my devices, but I also am keenly aware of the neglect that Mozilla has shown toward the mobile side of things. uBlock Origin is obviously a must-have extension, but it does not address the fundamental security risks that seem to exist with Gecko-based browsers, such as the lack of per-site process isolation; seemingly quite a powerful security feature that is present in Chromium browsers like Brave and has been for many years. Plus there are a few other security features present in Chromium browsers that Firefox doesn’t have (yet?). Maybe more important than ever as security incidents seem to be on the rise globally, and your browser is likely among your biggest weak points in general.
I feel that one of Mozilla’s biggest mistakes yet was not focussing enough on the mobile browser market - Firefox on mobile had a pretty strong start but it almost seems like it’s been in pseudo-maintenance mode for a long while. Also, bookmark syncing barely functions, at least for me, and I just don’t like the way that bookmarks on Firefox mobile work; it’s cumbersome and difficult to manage.
So at the moment I use a mix of Firefox on desktop, and then Brave on mobile and as a secondary browser on desktop. But I do find myself using Brave more often on desktop just because of the closer integration between desktop and mobile. I don’t particularly like Brave as a company and I don’t want to support people like Brendan Eich - but on a technical level and in terms of my personal security, Brave seems to be the better choice.
The second that Mozilla addresses the security issues on mobile I’ll instantly switch over.
I use different browsers for different purposes, although for most of my bookmark needs (mainly certain news articles and research) I’ve found that Vivaldi is hard to beat when it comes to staying organized. Their shortcuts feature is probably the best out there. I know they’re not a recommended browser for privacy, but I was willing to ignore that. I’m currently thinking about switching though because someone told me the other day on here that Vivaldi’s bookmarks aren’t E2EE, so now I’m researching which browsers have E2EE on their bookmarks and which one don’t.
Personally, the browser I use on my phone is much less of an important decision to me. My browsing is probably 95% Desktop / 5% Mobile (with most of my smartphone browsing just being quick queries "e.g. ‘how many teaspoons in a tablespoon’ type searches), so I tend to be much less concerned and selective with my mobile browser.
On Android, I’ve typically used Mull or Brave or FF focus, and usually have DDG Browser installed as well. (I haven’t actively used Android since Mull was discontinued). I don’t have a strong preference here.
On iOS, I primarily use Safari w/ Adguard, or Brave, with DDG browser installed as well. I don’t have a strong preference here.
Like many of the others in this thread, I’ve never had a need or want for bookmark or history syncing, There isn’t a ton of overlap between my desktop and mobile browsing, and prefer bookmarks to stay separate, so sync isn’t a factor I really consider.
Though I really want to replace Mull, I have not found any way to properly transfer bookmarks outside of [insecurely due to outdated Firefox I think] connecting it to an account, doing the same with something like Ironfox then disconnect and do. But I don’t wanna make an account if possible and yes if possible would like to avoid ADB Workarounds or manually bookmarking them again which would be very time consuming unfortunately.
then give me the option to import bookmarks
or I may have to resort to those workarounds I said, but with that I do prefer if there’s a manual way and if ADB methods or something could be avoided if possible.
