I’m working on my threat model. And while this site has been very helpful in understanding some possible threats (my data being leaked by a service provider with terrible security, or government surveillance, for example), one I’m having trouble finding information on is doxxing. Can anyone please help me understand this potential threat better so I can assess the risk of being doxxed? Some initial questions:
- Why do people dox? I imagine perceived grievance plays a role. But can this be refined further? Is it to humiliate or to terrify someone? Or both?
- What is the profile of someone who doxxes? I imagine it’s mostly folks who are politically radical and connected to other like-minded individuals, or else to what audience would they even display the information they’ve compiled on their target?
Any support you can give would be much appreciated.
