Trusted Monero Remote Nodes

space is cheap
you can get 500gb hard drives for free off the side of the road
I don’t see why people shouldn’t just prioritize running their own

The main constraint is bandwith, not storage.

If you are in a country with low-speed internet, good luck downloading the full blockchain…

But we SHOULD encourage people to run their own node.

I don’t see how it is possible to trust a node you don’t operate yourself, aside from considering probabilities like “it seems unlikely that this would be compromised,” which is not good enough.

The Tor idea is probably better for people not running their own node. But the emphasis should be on running your own node. This is a big investment because even with great internet and 50+ GB of free SSD space it often takes a week to sync.

Again, not really feasible for mobile users.

i use monero.fail website to cycle through some nodes specially the tor ones which i usually use it with my mobile wallet.
ofcourse i use my own node on my desktop . I also prefer to run the node over vpn to avoid any tracing.

Right, this is kind of the behavior we’re looking to prevent, because randomly choosing nodes from public lists is harmful for privacy. Since it is now proven that malicious nodes can provide valuable data to blockchain analysis companies.

Actually, cycling through random nodes is probably even worse than picking a random one and sticking with it, for the same reason random entry relays are worse than static Guard relays on Tor.

Of course, only using Tor nodes definitely helps lol

For those wondering how malicious nodes can de-anonymize users.

I heard today that Cake may have finally enabled TLS

Quite mad that still in 2024 enabling TLS is being celebrated and even something used in marketing asking for applause. I am lost here.
