Looks like as of earlier today, stable version of Thunderbird has launched. As expected pretty close to identical to K-9 Mail, however after doing some digging, the setting the turn on push notifications is located under folder settings instead of account settings, for those who decide to try it out.
At this point, it seems like if you use and like K-9, it only makes sense to switch if you prefer the bird over the robot dog for the branding.
Yes. If you already have and like K-9 there is no reason to change unless you prefer the Thunderbird branding and/or logo when K-9 gets its next update it’ll be identical to the new Thunderbird. Their blog says the intent on keeping both as identical apps because of those that like the K-9 branding
Very cool, I get all my apps via F-Droid and other repos.
Currently I have K-9 Mail offered by the official F-Droid repo.
Any knowledge on details regarding Thunderbird in the F-Droid repo or other repos?
I would encourage those of you who have questions to please read the release blog post here first.
As I already said, future K-9 Mail versions will (supposedly) be built from the same source as Thunderbird, so there is no need to switch. But yes, Thunderbird will be released on F-Droid soon.
Thunderbird is now on F-Droid. K-9 was auto-updated to “Thunderbird Beta” although it still keeps the K-9 logo for now.
Switching from K-9 to Thunderbird was very easy. When you start Thunderbird it asks if you want to import data, then you can select “another app” and then K-9 and it will import all the accounts including passwords.
