Thoughts on RedoxOS?

It seems like it would be a promising and secure alternative to Linux…in a few years time.

Edit:

From the website: " Redox is a Unix-like general-purpose microkernel-based operating system written in Rust, aiming to bring the innovations of Rust to a modern microkernel, a full set of programs and be a complete alternative to Linux and BSD.:

Too damn alpha to use. It’s a fun hobby project but I highly doubt it will be anywhere usable for the time being.

Security wise, it’s cool that it has drivers in userspace, microkernels etc. It also being written in Rust does make it safe from memory corruption issues too.

In concept, it sounds pretty cool and interesting and desirable. In reality, creating an OS–especially a desktop OS seems like a huge undertaking, I hope they succeed, but I wonder how. It appears to be a mostly one-man project at this point in time. Of course Linux began that way as well, but that was in the 90s, a lot has changed. Still it is cool to see someone attempting this, it appeals to the inner nerd in me, and I hope they make it out of alpha.

I have followed it from a distance, though the development pace is glacial due to the lead dev being busy with Cosmic on PopOS.

I’d want it to be used like xen rather a desktop OS (although that would be great too). Imagine a microkernel hypervisor written in rust with minimal lines of code :exclamation:

Eventually though, I hope projects like Redox will be the ones leading us away from monoliths like Linux kernel. I can also see it be amazing in embedded software and in servers maybe?
