What app do you use for daily notes, time management, and spreadsheets? Is there a full-fledged alternative to Notion? I used to use Anytype, but I found Appflowy more convenient, though both are still in early stages. What would you recommend? Is Notesnook worth the money?
In AppFlowy, the synchronization between my devices doesn’t work well.
I switched apps a lot in recent years and now moved to Anytype. Despite it being quite young, it works well, and it offers some really nice features. However, most of my notes still sit in Notesnook.
I want to use Anytype for personal notes, and also to run a YouTube channel and other projects, and so I sort of need a mix of something that’s simple (i.e. I can quickly add a random note) and something that I can take a bit further (e.g. interconnected notes that help me understand the bigger picture). Traditional list-like apps like Notesnook are sometimes a bit too overwhelming for complex tasks for me, and I would lose track of my notes and how they relate to each other.
Here are some quick thoughts on some of these more traditional apps I had used so far:
Notesnook: Great app overall. However, I did sometimes run into some issues with syncing and general UI bugs, especially with the recent UI update. It has quite generous pricing! It does offer auto backups, which is a nice thing to have if you want your notes to be safe, and the publishing feature is great too!. I would say NN is worth the money if that’s what you’re looking for.
Standard Notes: Felt a bit too cluttered with different note types to me, and I didn’t like many of the note types, e.g. the spreadsheet is not good enough to do advanced stuff and felt a bit clunky and out of place. I’d love it if there was just a simple markdown note type and that’s it. Also, SN is quite pricey compared to others. However, it does have a good auto backup to email feature that I liked!
Joplin: I quite like it, mainly because of the offline-first approach and how much it made me feel like I was in control. However, it does feel a little dated and syncing works best if you do it consciously, as in, you wait until it’s done to avoid causing conflicts. You can use it for free with WebDAV and other storage options. Joplin Cloud’s pricing is otherwise also alright, IMHO.
Yes, Anytype’s sync so far seems pretty neat. I am a bit cautious and usually wait for it to fully sync, but it only takes a couple of seconds for normal content, so that’s not really an issue. I didn’t encounter any sync issues so far. Though, I’ve only been using it for about a week or so.
I would say it takes a moment to ‘learn’ Anytype with its object types and template settings, but once you figure that out, it can be pretty much what you make out of it, i.e. it can be as simple or as complex as you need it. That’s probably what I like the most.
Recently, I’ve migrated my notes from QOwnNotes to Obsidian. I like it, its nice looking, and there is tons of plugins.
At the time, I chose QOwnNotes because it was markdown based, working on local file, I could sync those files with Nextcloud between my multiple devices, and the nextcloud note pass worked on the web and android to access my notes and cover phone usage.
I’ve migrated to obsidian when I learned that its now allowed to be used commercially. Obsidian is not open source, but since its better than the other one, ive switched. Its a local markdown software, so there was no conversion needed, just pointing to the correct folder and voila.
Hi @Jo
I looked at notesnook and it seems like a good software. I am not using it simply because I have a working solution and it’s working fine.
My solution offers me local markdown files that are compatible through multiple applications, and synched through nextcloud. This data portability and data ownership is something I out value on.
There are downsides, for example, notes are not encrypted locally, and can be read by any software. I wish to have encrypted files for thingslike daily journal, so I’ll need a different tool for this.
Notesnook seems fine (and has a long list of features) and if it good for you, then that good ! You can also check the recommended tools section of the websites for other ideas.
So far, on my side, the data exportation from notebook does not include images on the free plan. You’ll need to pay if you want a full export for data portability. Their reddit forum has a lot of bad comment from user regarding bugs.I do not that I know if it’s realistic.
