Remove Startpage

Kagi has also many great features, but the cons are heavier than the pros and I think it is the same case with SP.

Ads are fine, but clicking Microsoft ads that track you and infer what you’re searching for is something else entirely. However, all of these Bing-based “search engines” are forced to use Microsoft’s advertising network in accordance with their terms of use:

Do not:

  • Display data received from the Search APIs on the same page as content from any general web search engine, large language models or advertising network.

It would be good to recommend search engines that use a more privacy-respecting advertising network.

I don’t know how Brave Search fares, but it likely has a better chance at this as they use their own advertising network.

Sent Startpage another email. Doubt they’ll do anything about it at this point, though.

Three weeks, no response as I expected. Don’t really know what else to do at this point.

The fact is that nobody mentions these cons of Startpage anywhere it is recommended.

that is worrisome, You sure they received your email properly?

No way they didn’t receive it. I still received the automated reply saying my ticket number (56175) and that the email “has been received”, which is enough confirmation that this ticket is in their system; I just never got an actual reply to my ticket.

Also, not the first time I contacted them.

I know that I’m just speculating if it somehow got lost in transit or something, probably not.

I’m not sure if anyone mentioned it, but that feature is really useful for websites that block Tor.

Any update on this case? Their other company is StartMail, maybe you can contact their team for a faster response.

Unfortunately, nothing new has happened.

I’ve got a feeling that, at best, they’re just going to either forward me to Startpage, who is going to ghost me again, because this isn’t inherently a Startmail problem (unless they’re the exact same people as Startpage, then they’ll skip straight to the ghosting part).

Well their founder is the same (Robert), maybe he can sort it out. Does Startpage have like a call center? Maybe messaging them on socials.

Maybe, if I can somehow find his email address to contact him directly, which I don’t know. If someone has that information, that would be useful.

Yes and I have their phone number at hand, but last time someone tried that method of contact, they didn’t answer. I might attempt this though, just in case.

Seems like most of their social media accounts are mostly there to post memes; not even @Niek-de-Wilde had gotten a response from them through that channel in the past.

I might try contacting them via phone when I have time; not now though, it’s nighttime over in their timezone.

You should blacklist them,if they trying so hard to avoid contact they might be shady.

Unfortunately, I don’t actually have any power over the Privacy Guides recommendations list. How exactly am I supposed to “blacklist” them directly?

Hopefully one of the people with actual control over this list will remove them, but until then, might as well either get a response from Startpage or build more evidence against them from their lack of one.
