I want to discuss about startpage because there are some things I don’t like about them.
I don’t like:
Their browser: It is pointless and not really good. I don’t get why they developed it at all.
Their extension: Pointless to, appearently it should block trackers and show how good a website is in terms of privacy, but for me, these features don’t work at all:
However, there are also some things I like about them:
Ads: I am asking how duckduckgo can finance themselves if they let u disable ads and don’t show enough ads. Startpage shows many ads in their result page, on their startpage and even when typing:
Although when I click on an ad, it gets blocked my ublock origin.
They allow saving settings without cookies
Their blog. For some reason their german one isn’t being updated for 4 years.
Their image proxy which allows u to visit images directly, shouldn’t be a privacy concern.
I am not saying to remove it. I think it is nice to have 3 options for search engines but I am a bit skeptical about startpage. I just want to know what u think about it.
It works correctly, there are just no results for your query. If you try the same search on Google you have the same outcome.
If you use their services it means you trust them otherwise you avoid using startpage in the first place. It makes no sense wanting them not to provide a service because you have no trust.
I have no problem using it with a VPN, any specific issue that you are experiencing?
ok u are right with the first one but sometimes it shows no results. They even said that:
"Got it. The occasional empty search is normal and to be expected, but not 1/3 of the time. […] "
Happens for me too sometimes.
If u use anonymous view, shouldn’t they see what u do in the websites? Even if u don’t log in into an account, they can see what u type there, visit etc.
Startpage sometimes blocks TOR and VPNs. Using different relay fixes but it is annoying. The captchas and verifying request pages are annoying too.
Yes, when using SP’s anonymous view, all your interactions with the site are visible to SP. There’s no way to prove that they aren’t recording, analyzing, and sharing data about what you do in anonymous view, or that there isn’t a backdoor that allows a third party to spy on you while you use it. As users, our only options are to either take a leap of faith and assume those things aren’t happening, or avoid using the service. Personally, I take the leap sometimes when I need to view information on a site that won’t function unless I let it run a bunch of javascript that probably contains trackers/fingerprinters.
