Any recommendations that stand out from a security perspective? What do you guys use?
Wouldn’t recommend hosting your own email, just use one of the recommended providers.
Yeah, my question is what are the recommended providers? I’ve edited the post to make it clearer that I am not looking to self-host.
Email: Proton or Forward Email
Website: OrangeWebsite
Out of curiousity, what settled you on OrangeWebsite? I’ve been trying to decide between that, 1984, and NiceVPS, but there’s so mamy other options out there and so few ways to vet for which are good or not.
Sites like Wikileaks is using it and iceland has pretty good privacy laws.
edit: NiceVPS looks nice
Is there a reason why privacyguides doesn’t recommend any VPSs?
Indeed, altho I’m leaning toward Orange/1984 due to their green energy commitments + Iceland. And 1984 in particular since they’re more affordable… But I always wonder if I’m missing something with services like these…
It doesn’t require any personal information, and you can pay with Monero.
I have not written a VPS recommendation guide because I use almost no VPSs anymore, and I usually try to only write guides about things I use myself.
By the end of this year all of my own internet things will be on my own hardware, connected to my own ISP, and using my own IP space allocated to me by ARIN; so I have achieved all of my own freedom/privacy/security goals without dealing with third-party website/email providers at all.
This is not an achievable position for most people though, so there won’t be a guide about it
Of course, this doesn’t stop anyone else from writing a VPS guide.
The real question is: When you all come to this forum looking for web hosting advice, do you want:
- To be able to host a website while keeping yourself anonymous; or
- To be able to host a website while keeping your visitors’ data private
One or the other are generally easy to find solutions to, but finding a provider that does both can be a bit more challenging.
Even if it were achievable by most people, it just simply doesn’t make sense to do everything on your own instead of letting teams who are experts at it and are hired full time to do it for you.
For example, there is no way that I could do email hosting better than Proton.
One example from real life would be hiring a professional cleaner or chef instead of cleaning or cooking yourself, but that obviously depends on if one has more money than time and energy.
Since nearly nobody really does this IRL this sort of counters your point, but I digress…
Self-hosting email in particular is a vastly simpler process than most people make it out to be. We’ll probably have more thorough guides on the topic at some point.
Being your own ISP is probably not that private for a lot of threat models, because it can always be traced back to you.
Much appreciated! I believe 1984 and NiceVPS also do these things. Altho pricing-wise, Orange and NiceVPS are comparable, so I think Orange definitely seems preferable.
However 1984 is significantly cheaper, so I’m leaning towards that currently. Though Orange does seem like a more standard/professional provider…
That seems fair, but what about recommending Domain providers?
I came across this list a while back when I was looking for web hosting services. Maybe check out some of those listed?
So you’ll be hosting your own email? Are you using a 3rd party SMTP. I’d like to know what apps you’re using or will be using for email.
I’m going to test out Stalwart when I install email next week, we’ll see how it goes.
Personally I only use Cloudflare and Porkbun currently, and eventually everything will be moved off Cloudflare to Porkbun.
Thoughts on Dovecot, have you used it?
Better privacy policy on PorkBun or somethin’? While I have you, any opinions on Namecheap and/or their new project Spaceship?
