Recommendations for subtitle generators?

I’m looking for a service that would preferably be local and open source that can generate subtitles for movies and Tv, since I have a few Tv shows and movies on my NAS with no subtitles available

What platform would you be using?

I have been looking at this for my Mac and have yet to find a good solution.

One that I thought might be usable is the VideoSubs app which uses the speech to text capabilities built into the MacOS. But it does not do a very good job, especially if there is background sounds or music. I guess as Apple rolls out more AI based improvements it might get better with time if you have a newer Mac with an appropriate neural engine.

There is another app that is basically a subtitle editor called Jubler that I find fairly useful for manually creating subtitles short (less than 15 minutes) videos. To work well you need to install a specific obsolete movie player using homebrew. Way to tedious to even think about using for a TV show or movie.

If you are on Windows I think you may have more choices, at least that was my impression when I was doing searches to find ways to create subtitles locally.

There are instructions on the FUTO project page for installation on MacOS as well. A bit more involved than installing on Linux but apparently possible.

This might work for @Tally but for myself this is not a viable solution.

My movies and TV shows are on my NAS and dished up to my TV via Jellyfin. There are some embedded subtitle tracks that work in this setup but for me the easiest is to have a SRT file along with the movie file.
