I want to purge as much as I can off the internet while going through my old emails, but I learned of Canada’s bill C-27. Part of this bill was supposed to give Canadians a form of right to data erasure, however recently it has suffered some setbacks.
Should I go through and continue with my plan of purging?
Or do you think I should wait until the government finally (if ever) gets around to better privacy laws and purge then?
The main benefit of waiting would be the ability to send data deletion requests, but I am unsure of potential downsides.
Please note that what I’m about to say does not have a solid legal basis.
However, you could invoke on the GDPR (Article 17) and claim to be an EU citizen. In practice, very few services verify this detail. Similarly, you could claim to be a resident of California and rely on the CCPA (CIV § 1798.105). Keep in mind that these approaches apply only to services available in the respective regions (EU/US).
