Proton VPN Tor Server - Tor IP leak - leaks my home IP?

Hello to all !

Proton runs tor servers. When I am connected with one, and there is an IP leak in the tor network - will my home IP be forwarded to the destination?

Do I access the tor network with my home IP or with a proton IP?

(Normally when I am connected to a VPN, and then run the TOR browser, the VPN is a second protection against loosing anonymity - in the case of an IP leak in TOR.)

Thanks !!

I could be wrong but as I understand it, if connected via Tor and since Tor is routing you through multiple locations, you should still be okay if at all this ever happens.

You can do either. Directly would be faster but using it with a VPN is also okay. @jonah made a video about it a while back and I remember watching it to correct my own thinking for what I wanted answers for. So, perhaps watch that.

Sry, I just want to know how proton works technically.
Whats the difference between connecting with the tor network:

    1. via Tor Browser (without additional VPN)
    1. via a Proton Tor server (and then using a normal browser, cos there are sites that wont load in tor browser)

in case 1) my home IP can leak to the destination. So now I can put a VPN in front and have an additional protection.
in case 2) Am I connected directly with an entrance node or is there a Proton Own Server in front, which connects me to the tor network? In this case I would enter the tor network with a proton IP!

Whoa.

Hold on.

You did not mention explicitly or even explain that you were trying to use the Proton Tor server only and not directly through the Tor browser.

This is the standard way of doing it. It is normally the most recommended way to go about it.

This is not the best or ideal way to go about it. There are some technical differences that I cannot recall (hopefully others can chime in and correct me or explain better) but as I understand it, if you want the standard, normal, ideal Tor network connection - use the browser directly.

I’m not sure how you think or why you feel your IP will leak. It’s literally the Tow browsers’ job to ensure of this. But if you want to use a VPn first and then use Tor browser, you can.

To be honest, this is something I don’t have experience in or know a lot about. So I won’t say anything at risk of giving you false info.

Normally I use VPN + TBB (assuming that the vpn is trustful).
In few cases sites won’t load in tor browser - no way! That’s just the problem.
So to access them anonymously there is no other way then using another (safe)browser.

I still don’t know your threat model or the use case for which you want to use Tor or if you’re trying to use Tor all the time.

If you’re using Tor for select use cases and for select websites - use the Tor browser directly. That’s my recommendation.

If you’re trying to use or find ways to use Tor browser all the time, then it’s a losing battle you’re fighting because it is highly impractical and not worth the time and effort and the inconvenience it will cause you.

My final suggestions are thw following:

  1. Use Tor browser for what it is for - to access select websites and for select use cases based on your threat model.
  2. Use an always on VPN like Proton VPN or others recommended by Privacy Guides. And browser normally after “hardening” your browser with the right settings per your threat model.

Privacy and security is not complicated unless you make it so for highly niche and specific use cases or reasons for which it makes your life particularly difficult when it doesn’t really need to be.
