Manual updates is not only inconvenient, they can cause major security issues (for example if user uses unattended-updates to get latest automatic fixes) or just plain annoying. Can you guys help? Ping support, email them, vote on forum. Linux loves you
But the thing is there was a pain to move my parents from windows to Linux. And now I have trouble to get them how to update password manager.
Because I set cron to automatically run script with nala update -y > /dev/null 2>&1 && nala upgrade -y > /dev/null 2>&1 which already automates updates. But no. Proton wants us to do this manually.
I think it is really simpler to teach them how to use KeypassXC and how to backup KBDX file than how to update Proton Pass manually.
I haven’t used Proton (VPN) in a long time, but IIRC you can get Wireguard credentials from Proton and bypass their software completely. (Use the WG client packaged by your distribution.) Some VPN providers force their bloatware down your throat, but Proton isn’t one of them.
I don’t fine Proton Pass much of a problem to update and I’ve only been using Linux since May. It’s not much different than doing the daily upgrade via terminal.
I showed my dad, who still has a problem understanding the difference between a browser and a search engine, how to install Proton Mail a couple of days ago via Terminal. I’ve written down the instructions for him. Waiting for the app to update to see if he really understands.
