For new users, yes.
For existing users, since the SN password is used to generate the encryption key, Iām not sure itās possible to add login with proton, as on simplelogin.
Even if you think of it as putting all your eggs in one basket, it also has the advantage of trusting only one entity.
Here youāre quoting notesnook, but notesnook (for now) has no independent security audit by experts at the moment.
I personally consider this to be a higher risk.
I just wrote to the standard notes support and was greeted by a message that ended with:
āThis email is a service from Proton Drive.ā
confirms the theory it will be part of proton driveā features I guess.
I was todayyearsold when I found out about this. I have a sub to SN, funny that I never got an email mentioning this. Are there any further updates?
Continuing the discussion from Introducing Lumo, the AI where every conversation is confidential | Proton:
I was looking into this the other day to see if I could finally get Standard Notes through my Proton Unlimited plan, but I could not. They latest I can see is that theyāre supposedly working on some kind of integration and they were hiring, but thatās it since November 2024. Would love to get an update soon.
Yes this has already been brought up on one of the recent Proton related threads.
Some people are growing concerned with some of such decisions Proton is making.
I just sent them an email:
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing on behalf of Privacy Guides to seek clarification regarding Protonās ājoining forcesā with Standard Notes. We have seen mentions of this development on our forum and would appreciate official confirmation and additional details to better understand the implications of the alleged acquisition.
Specifically, we would like to know:
- Has Proton completed an acquisition of Standard Notes?
- What is the current legal status of Standard Notes in relation to Proton? Is Standard Notes now fully owned by Proton, or is this a partnership, joint venture or collaboration?
- How will this all affect existing users of Standard Notes? Will there be any changes to the service, pricing, or terms of use?
- Are there any plans to integrate Standard Notes with other Proton services, such as Proton Mail or Proton Drive? If so, what can users expect in terms of new features or functionalities?
We appreciate your time and effort in addressing these questions. Your response will help us and our community better understand what are the implications of the announcement last year.
Please note I am posting this and any replies to Proton and Standard Notes are joining forces. Feel free to reply there directly.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your prompt response.
Last I heard, they sorta poached the SN team to work on proton docs for the time being, but SN is still being updated on android at least. The ios app went a full year without updates but the android app gets updated every couple weeks, so Iām not really sure whatās going on rn. Even with the updates thereās still lots of little bugs that arenāt game-breaking showstoppers but still interfere with workflow, like in the mobile apps the top of the app juts up into the status bar of the phone and makes certain things unclickable. Or the keyboard getting stuck and not minimizing.
Sometimes it makes it hard to justify the $120/year subscription when SN didnāt appear on protonās 2025 roadmap and the development feels like an afterthought, especially on iOS
Standard Notes has always been a pricier option but it did provide fantastic privacy and security and longevity to your notes and info you store on it. So the price was worth it if you used it enough.
But yes, today, no. We have alternatives that are equally good for what they are and in comparison and I donāt think SN is worth $120 USD today. I have not heard of any new innovative things they have done with the product lately so one does need to question.
What are the alternatives?
Notesnook, Crypt.ee, Proton Docs
I always thought, or suspected, Proton Docs was built off of some of the research from Standard Notes
