There is a growing sentiment that the US shouldn’t be relied upon for the technologies that many people and businesses use every day. Lately, the US has been unilaterally cutting off access to critical technologies to European countries, prompting calls for “radical action” to bolster European tech stacks from EU lawmakers.
At Privacy Guides, we generally value technical guarantees over matters like jurisdiction. There is simply no alternative to privacy technologies like strong end-to-end encryption when it comes to protecting your information.
That being said, the United States certainly does not have a monopoly on the best technologies, and many of our favorite recommended tools come from Europe and all over the world. Tools from the European Union also generally benefit from much stronger data protection laws, thanks to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
If supporting the European tech industry is something that is important to you, here’s a non-exhaustive list of some of our favorites.
Nice, thanks for setting this up. I see a lot of traction going to this European Alternatives website with some bad recommendations privacy wise so this might provide a good alternative to european alternatives
I actually linked to them at the end of this! I like their website in general, but they are definitely far more broad in scope than we are. I agree, and hope this is a better and more tailored fit for our readers
Good list!
noticed indeed. Seems alright. Just good that we can link to something with the privacy scope in mind now too Not sure you saw my toot to them earlier Mare Polaris: "@european_alternatives perhaps we can talk over h…" - Mastodon
Lol for people recommending ecosia.
I honestly literally linked european alternatives just recently and I see this and the post.
Also I do feel as if the site list is just enough, we shouldn’t involve them as the ones recommended in PG seems to also exist on european alternatives anyway and they will not count UK as alternative unless it’s decentralized or something else like they do. Still just don’t involve them unless it’s a new suggestion, they filled their purpose.
tbh I don’t see why not
wouldn’t recommend it but would not go against anyone using it.
Also they recommend ecosia, again it’s european alternatives, not privacy european alternatives, I would let them be
