Privacy Guides isn’t the only non-profit that has a goal of increasing privacy (and general web freedom) for everyone. By providing links to other well known non-profits, we can increase visibility of the work others are doing. United, we are stronger, as I’d say
Proposal
In the About section, create a new article named “External Privacy Rights (Non-Profit?) Organizations” outlining other organizations which are important for digital privacy.
As an initial recommendation, I definitely think we should include the EFF. They do a lot of work to push for digital rights and privacy.
I’m unsure of actual acceptance criteria for such an article.
I was thinking something similar about that lately. I think it’s important to acknowledge that not everything can be resolved in a technical way and policies and laws can be overwhelming as we see more and more often.
Supporting no profit privacy promoting organizations that do active lobbying seems natural and I like the idea of a dedicated page for that.
But I’m not sure if this link collection is a great idea, because I can see two problems:
Endless discussions about which organisations to include or exclude
Some of them might become too political, way beyond tech and privacy, and it can be a very gradual shift.
A classic example for the latter would be the Mozilla Foundation (“We need more than Deplatforming”, “The Decentralized Web of Hate”).
Another, more severe example is the transformation of the German Pirate Party. They started out as a strongly libertarian party fighting for online and tech freedom (including the right to piracy, as the name mentions), got quite good polls and managed to get into some state parliaments. Then suddenly after an influx of many new members they became a far-left party, mostly identical to the Greens and losing focus of their original political aims, and unsurprisingly they never got re-elected and are <1% in the polls now.
