Opinions on Peergos?

PG recommends Peergos as cloud storage, but I haven’t really seen any videos or written reviews about it. Is it good? Is it fast? Wanted to know how the community feels about it.

I have not used it personally but have only heard good things about it. I’m still waiting for them to make it possible to buy via crypto (BTC atleast) but not sure if or when that’ll happen.

There should be enough info on this forum about it so you may want to read up to learn what others think. There fact that it’s recommended by PG is a mark of quality by Peergos.

It is good for sharing large videos. They play faster than with ente (at least before their new streamable videos feature).

I use it on Linux and Android:

  • What I really like is the 2-way sync on Android and Linux. Afaik this is the only E2EE project with true two-way sync on Android, which is a major plus.
  • I haven’t measured upload or download speeds, since I mainly sync in the background.
  • File access via browsers has some small, but noticable delay on non-cached files and folders.
  • Clients had some bugs with file syncing, but the devs have been fast at fixing reported bugs.
  • Self-hostable with federation and portable identity. If you self-host, please don’t forget to support the devs.
  • WebDAV bridge, proxy, mirroring and email bridge can be useful, especially, if you have a home server
  • Documentation is lacking, but you can ask here or on GitHub, if something is unclear.
  • Security and privacy is awesome, also protects metadata

What it does not have:

  • Photo-specific features like object recognition, face recognition, tagging and so on. Ente is still the best solution in this area.
  • Syncing of contacts and calendar with Android’s database
  • Backup-specific functionality. Use a dedicated backup solution instead, which would be best practice anyway.

All in all I would say give it a try. It’s an amazing project from a privacy and security perspective and definitely deserves a bigger user base. My impression is that it simply needs more users to make it more mature. The small inconveniences I had, have been worth the security and privacy gain over other solutions.

Can you clarify what you mean by two way here?

Syncthing does the same too. And you can of course use any Cloud Storage service with Cryptomator to maintain the privacy and security for your data.

This would be a big plus when they add/develop this feature.

How long have you been using Peergos?
