Your thought about ente self-hosted?

Hi there. I’ve been using nextcloud for my photo backup for mobile for quite some time. It works, but sometimes it’s not the best..

  • The web gallery is subpar and slow (can be fixed with community app, but didn’t quite get it). The mobile gallery is also lacking.
  • Had a lot of sync issue in the past. Seems less often or resolved with new server version
  • Can’t really access picture from outside the vault. Smb support was so buggy. Even if I use the is mount route, not sure it’s going to handle lots of gbs.

Well perhaps I could self hist ente server, get a great app experience, use my own storage, and expose my whole gallery.

Any thought about ente self-hosted ? Is it as good as the cloud offering ?

It’s the same software so it should be identical. I personally haven’t tried self-hosting ente yet but apparently it’s gotten a lot easier recently.

You could self-host Immich and mount your NC image folders into it. IMO it is the best photo solution feature and usability wise.

However I would be hesitant to host it on servers which I do not run from home (has no E2EE), or exposing it publicly, since it is still in heavy development. Ente is a good solution for these two scenarios. I self-host it and also have an account on their servers. Works reasonably well.

Thanks both ! I have a tailscale VPN so I don’t worry too much about the services I host at home. They can be insecure and it’s no big deal cause they are not exposed on the web. An attack from tailscale is possible, but unlikely since I’ve got no open ports and tailscale itself being hacked is unlikely. I need is to protect my account, but the signsture stuff should protect against that threat.
