Nitter itself is not broken. You could still self-host your own instance. Depending on how much effort its worth to you.

To each their own, but I fail to see the compelling reason to jump through hoops to read people yelling at each other, posting blatant disinformation, and ready Elmoās Ketamine-fueled rants.
Twitter seems to āeasiestā platform for people to quit. Reddit has dedicated, niche communities that can be hard to replace. Facebook and Instagram have the āfamily and friends lock-inā problem.
Twitter has none of that and seems easy to either stop using altogether or find one of the (more private) alternatives like Mastodon.
It has some legitimately useful news sources. For instance a lot of the OSINT accounts can have big events before it hits normal news sites.
Also some of my favorite automotive journalists post about their latest reviews there.
I can easily live without access to Twitter (Iāve never had an account), but it is annoying some useful info will no longer be accessible.
They require an account on the actual website to view a lot of tweets. Thereās a lot of info on there from security researchers posting their findings and organizations like GrapheneOS posting announcements and information there, I end up linking to Nitter all the time. Itās a real shame that Twitter is nerfed so hard right now, I donāt really understand why they donāt just let you view tweets without an account.
Iāve seen public services use it to provide notices for service interruptions.
If you were a sleazy website and you could force all users to fingerprint themselves, wouldnāt you?

I think Iāll go back to using Squawker (a fork of Quacker, which is a fork of Fritter, a third-party mobile client like Infinity for Reddit). Still allows X to track my usage but at least I donāt have to deal with ads and all the other bullshit on X. I literally only follow three accounts.
The early internet looking more and more different by the day. Enshittification taking over. We All these forms of resistance sadly were never sustainable. The real solution remains not just an alternative frontend but backend too (peertube, mastodon, etc..) Unfortunately, those will remain very difficult to replace the others due to lack of content.
probably wasnt worth it but I ended up just creating local instance of Nitter using my old twitter account auth. moved my rss feeder to my private space so i could access it via wireguard from my phone.
For the life of me I will never understand why public entities decide to only use Twitter to push out notices.

I get a small business who doesnāt have the technical expertise or the budget to own and operate their own website using platforms like Instagram and Facebook (and even Twitter) to promote their services. But Governments and public safety offices that rely on that model are morons.
I would strongly recommend anyone running into that to reach out to their local officials and advocate for them to post critical information on platforms that are free and open to all. It not okay that critical alerts are hidden behind a āmust create accountā wall.
Okay. I would say then that GrapheneOS folks and the like should move to a platform like Mastodon all the same. Or at least figure out a way to cross-post said information.
Twitter has been a dumpster fire for a long time now. Itās certainly gotten worse since Elon took over both in terms of access (for non users) and just the quality of the platform. If folks are still relying on that platform when viable alternatives exist that is on them.
Iām not saying Nitter wasnāt useful. It was. And I myself used it in circumstances where viewing something on Twitter was the only option. But I also wouldnāt advocate for anyone who cares about privacy to keep jumping through flaming hoops to access the site.
At this point anyone who is exclusively posting stuff on Twitter is either okay with not having a massive chunk of the population be able to view their content or is just lazy. There isnāt a lot of grey area here IMO.
