Need help with cloud providers

On PG recommendations only two of them, so it is not really something I am looking for.

I need private cloud with free plan. Any free plan is ok, because I need to store tiny files (3 files, all not more than 4mb) for redundancy. I do not need paid accounts, because files are super tiny and I do not plan to upload anything beyond them.

I absolutely cannot loose this files or this will create a catastrophe for me. For privacy reasons I am not telling what these files are, but it is related to cryptography.

So my idea to store them in 3 different clouds + 3 different USB stick drives, that’s why I do not need paid accounts (I don’t need extra space, just to upload 12 MB data and forget about this)

Any good recommendations? PCloud? Filen? Mega? Proton?

There’s a few out there - including the ones mentioned. Ente Locker seems like this would do the trick?

If it’s that small, you could also use a secure e-mail?

That’s what I do now, ha-ha. But idea is to create redundancy to be sure I will never loose this files. Because if i loose them, I will be doomed and locked out from my digital life, finances and even few “smart” physical locks.

That’s interesting, I will take a look.

You might also find 2of3 by Ente of interest. I’m not sure what the use case here will be as it only has 222 characters, but might be useful for any master password retrieval for those services you’re using to protect your worldly assets.

If the files are small and important, I think you could encrypt them with Picocrypt/VeraCrypt/Cryptomator and upload them to any cloud provider, not necessarily an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage service.

Also, be aware that most providers have inactivity policy, so don’t forget to check it and log in frequently to prevent account termination.

I’m a Filen paid user and occasionally use Proton as a free user, they are good so far for me. I have also tried pCloud and Koofr, they don’t have end-to-end encryption for the free plan though.

What do you think of them? Are they trustworthy?

That’s interesting idea, actually. But even if I encrypt them, won’t cloud just ban me for “suspicious” files? Because I used Terabox some time ago, and they banned me for this.

In that case, you dodged a bullet, whichever cloud storage provider bans you because you upload encrypted files is not worth using, definitely a red flag. Even for non-privacy-conscious user, putting a password on a zip file (which is encryption) is a common practice. I think you could sign up for free accounts with multiple cloud providers and test them, they are free anyway, then use whichever you feel comfortable and easy to use.

They don’t offer end-to-end encryption and they are not open-source, you would have to trust their words to not look at your files if you don’t encrypt the files yourself. Koofr claims they don’t scan your files, pCloud is known to scan your files and ban you if you upload copyrighted content. In my opinion, Koofr seems to be more trustworthy, but pCloud has more features, but that might be irrelevant in your use case, since you only need to upload a few small files for long-term storage.

+1 for encrypting first, then putting wherever you want, in my humble opinion you should be doing this anyway before putting them on the usb stick, considering how important they are. That said, i wouldn’t be concerned with encrypting them to an already encrypted place, like proton or ente for example, but that is just me. Its always about finding a nice balance, amirite?

Ive tested picocrypt and liked it, its lightweight and simple, and you can also download the files for itself which may be comforting.

Also, are they small enough to add to a password manager? May be another option.

Final thing (unsolicited, take it or leave it, no offense), get a nice setup for such things then be at peace. Eg, have some secure/private/convenient way to store and sync via cloud, have some hardware alternative if desired, stay organized with a password manager, then just relax and know its fine. If possible, just have one or two passwords you need to remember (pw manager and authenticator?) and be at peace with it all. Don’t read complacent, you can still learn and check on things every now and then. Use the pw manager for notes as well to help you stay organized.

If the files are that small then you could actually use an E2EE email provider. Just save them as attachments and send them to yourself or just use saved drafts.

Something like this:

Copy 1 - Protondrive

Copy 2 - tuta email attachment

Copy 3 - Ente Locker

Any reason why you need three different cloud providers? I also have some small files that are important to me, but I encrypt them using VeraCrypt and I would upload to any cloud provider.
