Introducing Proton Scribe, a private writing assistant!

Proton is on fire! They just keep on delivering, their Proton Unlimited plan was already insane value and they just keep adding to it.

Edit: can’t find any information on when Proton Unlimited and Mail Plus users will have access to this feature :frowning:

This is excellent news. I was starting to think, protonmail could be a hard sell once people get use to the having LLM’s write their emails.

This should help proton stay competitive in the game.

Once the Docs feature is bit more polished, I bet they can add this it Docs too.

If Proton manages to create a private, centralised ‘suite’ of applications, just like Google and Microsoft, with a focus on productivity, security, privacy and UI minimalism, then this would be a huge win for practicality in that it would save so much time by removing the need to hunt down applications for different tasks, and to learn the quirks and intricacies of the subtle (or great) UI differences created by different software developers between different programs, and by making data transfer across the programs, and access easy (more centralised). The previous idea can be summarised as standardisation, i.e., removing the need to relearn things needlessly due to the whimsical decision making in the construction of programs by capitalist companies (or differences between software due to more benign reasons, such as the programming languages used), for example when switching from Apple to Windows. At the same time this could lead to monopolisation.

Proton Scribe is only in the paid business and Visionary/Lifetime plans right now, but Proton will look into making it available to more users at a later date.

Is this different than going to Drive → New Document?

Yes, Proton Scribe is only in the Proton Mail email composer.

Kind of lame Proton Unlimited users can’t use it. Hopefully that changes soon.

They’ll roll out it to other plans eventually.

I don’t have this on my Visionary account or my Business account yet.
edit: now I do, on the next day

Looks interesting, but raises a couple of questions in my mind:

  1. When they say no-logs server side LLM, do they mean no-logs enforced by privacy policy (they will not willingly retain/they will periodically delete), or that their servers cannot technically log usage at all (no-logs guaranteed by technology)?
  2. Also, have they clarified if this will be protected communication under Swiss Law like their VPN is, or can they be forced to log server side chats based on court orders like they logged IP for the French Activist using Proton Mail?
  3. Looks like it will be a more business focused feature as of now, does this signal Proton accelerating their plans to challenge Google Workspace? Would this mean individual users may get shorter end of the stick in the long term?

I think it means they just don’t keep logs because of privacy policy

We can’t be forced to log Scribe prompts, nor do we store anything. Also, it can be run locally so nothing goes to the server.

So it’s the same as with Proton VPN? Can’t be legally forced to log because laws haven’t caught up yet?

Welcome to the PG forum Proton Team!

Any ETA regarding when Scribe will be available for Unlimited / Family subscribers, and hopefully will it be free or with extra cost?

Thanks for the welcome! :purple_heart: We’re exploring the possibility of bringing Proton Scribe other plans, we’ll keep you posted!

Run locally?? Would you mind elaborate a bit, like required spec for running locally and how.

Not a business user, just curious.

System requirements

You need at least 4 GB of storage space available to download the model the first time you use it. It won’t work in incognito mode, as not enough local storage is available.

macOS

  • CPU: M-series chip
  • 8 GB RAM
  • Chromium-based browser or the Proton Mail desktop app

Windows or Linux

  • CPU: Intel Core 7th generation, or AMD Ryzen 1000 series
  • Dedicated GPU with 6 GB of VRAM and FP16 capability, such as a Nvidia RTX 2060 or AMD RX 5500 XT
  • 8 GB RAM
  • Chromium-based browser. Support for the Proton Mail desktop app will come at a later date.

This uses WebGPU, and is probably inspired by WebLLM. You can look at what are those in this Proton blogpost How to build privacy-protecting AI | Proton

Awesome, just wanted this clarity. With all these new technologies, you never know. Law is not evolving fast enough to deal with the questions these advances are throwing. Looking forward to using it
